Albany Devils News Release
LOWELL, Mass. - Jordan Parise made 21 saves for his second career shutout as the Lowell Devils (38-29-5-6) kept their playoff hopes alive with a 2-0 victory over the Portland Pirates (35-31-3-9) Friday night at Tsongas Arena.
Lowell and Portland battled to a scoreless tie in the opening stanza, while the Devils kept most of the play in the offensive zone. Aided by three power plays, the Devils outshot the Pirates 12-5 in the first, while G Gerald Coleman made every stop between the pipes for Portland.
Midway through the second Lowell took the lead. Chris Minard scored for the second straight night, upping his season total to a t! eam-leading 31 on the year. Grant Marshall and Tuomas Pihlman assisted. Soon thereafter the Devils got into penalty trouble. They took three penalties in the span of less than two minutes, but the penalty killers and Parise withstood the barrage. The Devils led in shots 13-10 for the period.
Early in the third, David Clarkson gave the Devils a little cushion. Second on the team in goals, Clarkson potted his 19th of the season to make it 2-0 Lowell at 2:12. The Lowell defense tightened up the rest of the way, holding the Pirates to just six shots on goal. Parise stopped them all, picking up his 17th win and second shutout of the campaign.
Lowell remains in the playoff hunt, trailing third place Worcester and fourth place Providence, who played each other tonight. With the Bruins picking up a 4-3 win in regula! tion, bo th of the teams need just one point to clinch a playoff spot. Providence travels to Springfield on Saturday, while the Sharks are in Manchester.
