Norfolk Admirals News Release
NORFOLK, Va. - The Norfolk Admirals (40-26-3-7) finished the 2013-14 regular season in a respectable losing effort to the Binghamton Senators (44-22-3-5), 4-2, on Saturday night at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.
The Admirals' Igor Bobkov (5-3-1) turned aside 25 shots out of 28 total attmepts . Binghamton's Scott Greenham (4-0-1) saved all 16 shots he faced in almost 34 minutes as his replacement, rookie Chris Driedger, stopped 20 pucks on 22 attempts in his professional debut.
Binghamton found holes in the Admirals defense early that was without the likes of Garnet Exelby, Nolan Yonkman and Steve Eminger, who head coach Trent Yawney decided to rest. The Senators' Buddy Robinson redirected a David Dziurzynski wrister from the point for a 1-0 lead at 7:34 and Matt Puempel notched his thirtieth goal of the season when he finished a rebound to the wide side from a Cody Ceci shot at 8:50 of the first.
Binghamton's onslaught of Bobkov continued shortly after Puempel's goal as Shane Prince picked a puck off the boards behind the Norfolk net. Prince shoveled a pass in front as rookie Ryan Dzingel drove the Admirals' cage. Dzingel lifted a one-timer from up close over Bobkov's right shoulder for a 3-0 lead at 9:50 of the first period.
The Admirals finally got on the board almost midway through the third period on the power play. Andre Petersson closed in on net and snapped a wrister along the ice from a sharp angle and into the bottom corner inside the near post. Petersson's marker cut the lead to two at 9:18 of the final frame.
Kevin Gagne made it interesting late in the third with a slap shot goal off a loose puck that deflected from a Senator's stick past Driedger. The goal shortened the Binghamton advantage to 3-2 at 18:01 of the third.
Bobkov emptied the net to allow the extra attacker after Gagne's goal. The Senators were able to work the puck out of their zone and into Norfolk's on the stick of Robinson. Petersson illegally tossed his stick in front of Robinson as the Binghamton winger released the puck with four seconds left. The strategy worked in rerouting the shot, but officials immediately ruled it a goal due to the illegal action of Petersson. Robinson's second of the night shut the door on the Admirals and sealed a 4-2 win for the East Division champions.
Norfolk did have some success on the power play converting once on four man advantages. The Admirals' held Binghamton scoreless on their three power play opportunities.
The Admirals complete the regular season with a 40-26-3-7 record and a third place finish in the East Division. Norfolk did clinch a spot in the Calder Cup playoffs last night at home with a 3-1 victory against Hershey, ending the regular season in eighth in the Eastern Conference.
