Springfield Falcons News Release
Albany, NY - The Springfield Falcons (47-23-1-5) were defeated by the Albany Devils by the final score of 5-2 Saturday night at the Times Union Center, completing the 2013-14 regular season.
After allowing the first four goals of the game on scores by David Wohlberg, Scott Timmins, Joe Whitney and Brandon Burlon, the Falcons answered two straight tallies in the third period to cut the deficit in half.
Jake Hansen got Springfield on the board at 7:56 of the final frame, burying home a rebound on the doorstep past Albany netminder Scott Wedgewood. For Hansen, the goal was his 11th of the season. Under three minutes after Hansen's score, Falcons forward Darryl Boyce found the back of the net. Boyce ripped a wrist shot from the slot at 11:27, cutting the Devils' lead to 4-2.
Albany's Harri Pesonen added an empty-net goal with 3:28 remaining in regulation, sealing a 5-2 Devils victory.
Mike McKenna made nine saves on 13 shots in 26:58, earning his 10th regulation loss of the season. The St. Louis native finished the regular season with a 22-10-1 record with a team-high 2.54 goals-against average, .910 save percentage and three shutouts. Rookie Anton Forsberg relieved McKenna midway through the second period, stopping all 10 shots he faced in 32:54 of action.
Wedgewood made 20 saves on 22 shots in net for the Devils, improving to 16-14-3 in 2013-14.
Neither team was able to convert on the power play. Springfield went 0-for-4 with the man advantage, while Albany went 0-for-3.
Saturday's game marked the last of the 2013-14 regular season, as the record-breaking campaign for the Springfield Falcons has come to an end and will make way for the 2014 Calder Cup Playoffs. The Falcons set new franchise records with 47 wins, 100 points and a .658 points percentage this season.
