Portland Pirates News Release
Saco, ME- In their final game of the 2013-14 regular season, the Portland Pirates fell to the St. John's IceCaps 5-4. Brandon Yip led the way for the Pirates with two goals with Brandon Gormley and Tobias Rieder each finding twine as well. Louis Domingue made 31 saves in the losing effort.
The Pirates came out hot in the first, getting two past IceCaps netminder Michael Hutchinson. Gormley tallied first at the 6:54 mark while on the power play. Andy Miele received a pass from Connor Murphy and quickly dished it cross-ice where Gormley blasted a one-timer into the net. At 14:43, Rieder made it 2-0, finishing off a one-timer of his own. Miele broke out of the Pirates zone and fed Jordan Martinook the puck on the left wing. Martinook glided towards the net before feeding Rieder on the right who knocked home his 28th goal of the year.
In the second, St. John's climbed back, scoring at 4:46 when Kael Mouillierat beat Domingue and tying the game at 15:39 with Jon Albert getting credit for the goal. But Yip would answer, scoring a shorthanded goal at 17:32. Yip stole the puck in the neutral zone and skated into the IceCaps zone, firing a wrister from the lower right circle short-side corner to give the Pirates the 3-2 lead.
But the third belonged to the IceCaps as they poured in three goals. Just 1:10 into the period, Jerome Samson made it 3-3 while on the power play and Josh Lunden scored at 8:42 to give the IceCaps their first lead. Again, Yip would respond for the Pirates. At 13;38, Yip was hauled down in front and was awarded a penalty shot where he promptly deked around Hutchinson and planted his second goal in the back of the net. The IceCaps would react quickly, however, with Lunden getting his own second goal at 14:14. In the end, the Pirates tried desperately to find the game-tying goal, but the IceCaps shut them down. Hutchinson finished the game with 27 saves.
The Pirates finished their regular season with a 24-39-3-10 record for 61 points. Andy Miele finished with a team-high 45 assists and 72 points. Lucas Lessio led the team with 29 goals.
