WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Behind Nick Basto's monster day at the plate and Spencer Adams' strong start on the mound, Winston-Salem defeated the Lynchburg Hillcats 4-1 on Thursday night at BB&T Ballpark.
Lynchburg (16-5) led 1-0 going into the fourth when Basto provided the Dash (8-13) with a jolt. With runners on first and second and one out, the 22-year-old smashed a three-run home run to left against Hillcats starter Justus Sheffield (2-1). Basto finished the night 3-for-4 and a triple short of the Dash's third cycle in the last six days.
The Florida native has now homered in back-to-back contests, and he paces the Minor Leagues with 35 hits. His .432 average leads the Carolina League by a wide margin.
Winston-Salem pushed the lead to 4-1 in the fifth. With a runner on second and two outs, Dash second baseman Toby Thomas smashed a double to center field, driving in Louie Lechich to make it 4-1. The Alabama native has now seven hits in his last nine at-bats.
For the first time this series, Lynchburg scored first. Ivan Castillo plated the game's first run in the third inning on an RBI ground to make it 1-0. The Hillcats would not muster any more against Dash starter Spencer Adams (3-0). The 20-year-old went six innings, allowing only four hits and one run. The Dash are 4-1 when Adams pitches.
Jacob Morris threw two innings of scoreless relief for Winston-Salem in the seventh and eighth. The former outfielder has now logged six and two-thirds scoreless frames to start his Dash tenure. Euclides Leyer worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning to pick up his first save of the season and 10th as a professional.
With the win, the Dash improve to 2-8 at BB&T Ballpark. Winston-Salem is also the first team to hand Lynchburg a road loss this season. The Hillcats fall to 9-1 away from Calvin Falwell Field.
The Dash hit the road for a three-game set against Frederick that begins Friday at 7 p.m. Winston-Salem sends right-hander Matt Cooper (1-1, 3.86 ERA) to bump against Keys righty Lucas Long (0-1, 0.78 ERA). The game will be available on wsdash.com/broadcast and the TuneIn App. The Pregame Dash will begin at 6:45 p.m.
Your Home Team returns to BB&T Ballpark for a seven-game homestand from May 2-8 against two Southern Division foes. The Dash will play three against Myrtle Beach before squaring off in a four-game set against the Salem Red Sox. Tickets are available by calling (336) 714-2287 or visiting wsdash.com.
