Aces win big, 7-3 over Victoria

November 18, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
Alaska Aces News Release

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Joe Talbot and Olivier Filion scored twice as Alaska scored four goals in less than five minutes in the first period of an eventual 7-3 victory over Victoria before 4,065 Wednesday at Sullivan Arena.

The game did not start well for the Aces, who allowed the first goal for only the fourth time in 13 contests and saw their run of 18 consecutive power plays erased come to an end, as Brad Dexter rifled a slap shot just underneath the crossbar at the 2:13 mark of the opening frame. But Alaska came roaring back, ending a string of 19 fruitless power plays when Filion scored the first of his two at 4:25 to tie the game 1-1. Chris Minard gave the Aces the lead for good with his eighth goal of the year (second in the ECHL) at 7:59. Just 18 seconds later, Jordan Cameron found Kimbi Daniels unmolested in front for an easy tap-in and a 3-1 edge. Less than a minute after the goal by Daniels, Talbot scored the first of his two to chase Salmon Kings goaltender David Brumby at 9:14, albeit for just a minute of game action.

Victoria actually outshot Alaska 30-15 from that point on (and 34-29 for the game), but Alaska kept adding to its lead, as Talbot scored his second of the night and fourth of the season at the 7:12 mark of the second period for a 5-1 bulge heading into the final 20 minutes. Both of Talbot's goals were set up by his centerman, Scott Gomez.

Charles Linglet pushed the lead to five goals with 8:20 left in the third period before Ryan Watson answered with another power play goal for the Salmon Kings less than two minutes later to reduce the deficit to 6-2. Filion's second goal of the night at the 16:58 mark and Ryan Finnerty's fifth goal in six games for Victoria with 1:44 remaining capped off the scoring. Lance Mayes posted 31 saves to earn the win in net for the Aces, who now have won five of their last six to move into second place in the West Division at 7-5-1 overall. The Salmon Kings have dropped five straight and remain in the West basement at 2-7.

Game two of this three-game series will be held Saturday at 7:15 p.m. on Military Appreciation Night, with special intermission festivities scheduled. Both Saturday and Sunday matches between Alaska and Victoria will be broadcast live on AM 750 KFQD and available via video webcast at www.alaskaaces.com, courtesy of B2 Networks. Sunday's series finale will begin at 1:30 p.m. and will be followed by the KeyBank Sunday Skate with the Aces.
