Bakersfield Beats Gulls 2-1 in OT

San Diego Gulls News Release

SAN DIEGO – Mike Hofstrand netted the game-winner 1:35 into overtime, lifting the Bakersfield Condors to a 2-1 win over the San Diego Gulls Wednesday night, before 4,033 fans (and dogs) at the Sports Arena.

The Gulls were holding the ECHL's first-ever "Pooch Party," where fans were able to bring their dog to the game. The canines and their owners were happy up until the midway point of the third period, when the Condors tied the game at one apiece.

With the win, the Condors (8-0-1) remain undefeated and extend their West Division lead to three points over the second-place Idaho Steelheads. The Gulls (4-4-2) are now winless in three straight and fall seven points back of Bakersfield.

San Diego jumped out to a 1-0 lead on Nick Ganga's first goal 2:23 into the first period. Ganga started the play by winning an end zone faceoff back to Jonathon Shockey, who rocketed a slap shot toward the net. Yutaka Fukufuji made the save, but Ganga was right on the doorstep to nudge the rebound home. Sean Murphy also earned an assist for his first professional point.

Bakersfield had a golden opportunity to tie the game five minutes into the second when Paul Rosebush skated in on a breakaway attempt. Former Gull Kevin St. Jacques, who had two assists Saturday against San Diego, found a wide-open Rosebush at center ice. Trevor Koenig, however, took matters into his own hands and poke-checked the puck away from Rosebush.

The Condors then had a goal taken away from them about two minutes later. Luis Tremblay wristed a shot from the point that Dennis Shiryaev knocked into the net off his skate. Referee Andy Thiessen, however, ruled that Shiryaev made a distinct kicking motion and waived the goal off, retaining the 1-0 Gulls lead.

That's the way it stayed until rookie Connor James lit the lamp – officially – with a power-play goal 10:18 into the third period. After taking a drop pass from Shiryaev, Lars Peder Nagel drove down the right wing and dished a centering pass to James, who chipped it over Koenig's shoulder.

Teams traded power play chances late in the third, but neither could convert and the game headed to overtime. In the extra session, the Condors had the forecheck going inside the San Diego zone. The Gulls had an opportunity to clear it, but coughed-up the puck right in the slot. That's were Hofstrand picked it up and wristed it past a screened Koenig.
