Colorado Eagles News Release

LOVELAND, Colo. - The Alaska Aces defeated the Colorado Eagles, 5-3, in a penalty-filled contest that marked the second of three meetings between the teams this week. Referee Geoff Miller issued 20 power plays on the night (despite only one fight), adding up to 58 minutes' worth of penalties. Five of the game's eight goals were scored via power plays.

For the second game in a row, Colorado's league-leading power play staked the home team to an early lead when Kevin Ulanski took a pass from Trent Daavettila in the right circle and sent a bouncing puck inside the far post at 4:27.

After controlling play for the first half of the period, Colorado withstood a strong Alaska surge, led by outstanding goaltending from Adam Brown. But at 17:36, Nick Mazzolini skated in on an odd-man rush and put his 36th goal of the season in off the post, tying him for the league lead in goals.

The Aces hit a pair of posts in the first four minutes of the second period before Bobby Hughes finally got one into the net when he scored from between the circles at 4:24. But the tides turned in the second half of the second stanza when Alaska players started a parade to the penalty box.

Colorado took advantage to not only tie the game, but take the lead with a pair of power-play goals 24 seconds apart in the final minute of the period. Collin Bowman tied the game with a blast from the point at 19:28 during the Eagles' second 5-on-3 advantage in a matter of minutes.

Then, with just over seven seconds left in the second stanza, Ulanski netted his second of the game by snapping a shot past Gerald Coleman from the left circle to put the home team up, 3-2, heading into the third period.

The Aces tied the game up again 5:45 into the final frame when Hughes potted his second goal of the game one second after a 5-on-3 advantage expired. And with the teams skating 4-on-4 midway through the frame, Tommy Mele jumped off the bench and took in a deflected pass before scoring on a breakaway shot that went off of Brown's glove and fluttered into the net. Just over a minute later Garry Nunn made it 5-3 with a 5-on-3 goal to close out the scoring.
