Stockton Thunder News Release

DALY CITY, Calif. - Veteran Shawn Weller scored his 12th goal with 0.1 seconds left in regulation for a game tying marker and earned the winner in the fifth round to lift the Stockton Thunder (35-26-9, 79 points) to a heart stopping 2-1 comeback shootout win before 4,027 fans at the Cow Palace on Friday.

The Thunder, who had just 12 shots through the first 40 minutes, came back with a 17 shot effort in the third period and posted its third come-from-behind victory when trailing after two periods this season.

Paired with a Colorado loss to Alaska tonight, their magic number was also reduced to two points to clinch home ice advantage in the opening round of the Kelly Cup Playoffs.

Goaltender Olivier Roy made 37 saves for the win and stopped four of five bids in the shootout.

Both teams survived a combined three penalty kills in the first period for a scoreless tie and Olivier Roy made the save of the period, stopping Christian Ouellet of San Francisco on a penalty shot with 10:24 left. Ouellet deked to the forehand and Roy swiped the shot with his glove.

Roy's first blemish came on a jam play at the net with 17:10 elapsed in the second period, with no goal ruled by the officials until further review. The goal was awarded to Daultan Leveille, who crashed the net for a loose puck after Mike Little locked him up on a partial breakaway. He earned his fifth goal of the year.

The Thunder managed just six shots in the period and had their best chance on a deflection to Harrison Reed in the slot, who misfired on a rolling puck to Taylor Nelson's blocker.

Stockton continued to pound away for the game tying goal in the third period and finally earned the equalizer in breathtaking fashion before time expired in regulation.

As the Thunder knocked the puck into the Bulls zone following a penalty kill, Ryan Constant and Ryan Hayes deflected the puck into the slot to Weller. With the clock winding down, he spun off a check and fired a desperate wrist shot that deflected off Nelson and into the net before time expired, sending the Thunder into eruption at their bench.

Following a scoreless overtime, Ryan Hayes got the shootout going with a toe drag goal around Nelson's blocker in the first round. Bryan Cameron tied it in the second round, but Weller came off the bench in the fifth round with a nifty backhanded drag around Nelson's glove for a 2-1 shootout lead.

Roy stopped Kory Falite of San Francisco in the fifth round to seal the game.
