Alaska Aces News Release

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Anchorage Aces have agreed to terms with Eagle River product and former NHL winger Ty Jones for the remainder of the 2002-03 season.

Jones, who turns 23 tomorrow, was born in Richland, Washington, but raised just outside of Anchorage prior to leaving for the Western Hockey League at the age of 16. He became the first player from Alaska ever to be picked in the first round of the NHL Draft when Chicago selected him with the 16th overall pick in 1997. Jones appeared in eight games with the NHL Blackhawks when he was 20 but has been moved around the minors since 1999. He has played for the Norfolk Admirals, Chicago's top affiliate in the American Hockey League, in each of the last two seasons. Jones spent most of his four years in the WHL with Spokane, racking up 36 goals, 84 points, and 161 minutes in penalties for the Chiefs in 1997-98.

Jones will be in the lineup as Anchorage plays host to Idaho in Perry Florio's head coaching debut tonight at 7:00 p.m. All games are broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM, with Jack Michaels calling the play-by-play. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off, presented by GCI.
