Alaska Aces News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska â Christian Soucy turned in 32 saves and made sure Perry Florio's first game as Anchorage head coach would be a victorious one as the Aces snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 2-0 shutout of Idaho before 3,313 Friday at Sullivan Arena.
Florio, who became the third man to patrol the Anchorage bench in the last 14 months after Rod Davidson was fired Thursday, watched as Kevin McNeill scored four minutes into the game to give Soucy all the offensive support he would need. McNeill's new linemates, Carl Drakensjo and Jason Modopoulos, both were credited with assists. Midway through the second period, Dean Larson (who played most of the night with Yvan Corbin and newly signed power forward Ty Jones) notched his 23rd goal of the year to give Anchorage a 2-0 edge. Soucy picked up an assist on the goal and had 25 saves over the first 40 minutes as the Aces led heading into the third period for only the sixth time in 54 games.
Anchorage (13-39-2) limited the Steelheads to only seven shots in the third period, preserving Soucy's shutout and only its second victory in 15 tries against Idaho this year. The Steelheads also had their club-record 12-game unbeaten streak and seven-game winning streak snapped. The Aces, meanwhile, won for only the third time in their last 21 games. The shutout marked Anchorage's first at home in the New Millennium, since Marc Delorme blanked Fresno 2-0 on December 28, 1999.
Anchorage and Idaho meet for the 16th and final time this season tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. All games are broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM, with Jack Michaels calling the play-by-play. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off, presented by GCI.
