Gulls Comeback For 2-1 Win
February 21, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
San Diego Gulls News Release
FRESNO, Calif. -- Jamie Black scored back-to-back goals in the third period, lifting the San Diego Gulls to a 2-1 come-from-behind win against the Fresno Falcons Friday night, before 6,488 at Selland Arena.
San Diego (33-16-3) again had outstanding goaltending from Cris Classen, who finished the game with 27 saves and upped his record to 10-2-0. With the third-period comeback, the Gulls maintain their four-point lead over the Bakersfield Condors for second place in the West Coast Hockey League.
Fresno had a 1-0 lead entering the third period, but Black tied it at 3:39. Black took a pass from Cory Cyrenne, burst down the right wing and wristed a shot that trickled by Mark Gowan. It was his first of the game, and first since Opening Night. Black notched his second of the night - third of the season - at 11:21, diving for a loose puck in front of the net.
After a scoreless first period, the Falcons (27-18-5) broke the deadlock with a five-on-three power-play goal 7:02 into the second. The Gulls got caught with too many men on the ice and were given an extra bench penalty when Steve Martinson argued with referee Max Battimo. On the ensuing two-man advantage, Jason Weaver worked the puck to Kris Porter, who beat Classen for his team-leading 23rd goal.
San Diego had back-to-back power play chances later in the second, but couldn't solve Gowan. Fresno had a handful of opportunities to increase the lead, but Classen was rock-solid in net, holding the one-goal deficit.
The Gulls came out firing in the opening period, outshooting the Falcons 11-6, but Gowan weathered the storm and kept the game scoreless heading into the second period.
Notes: Sylvain Deschatelets had his seven-game scoring streak snapped... Mark Pederson has 15 points in the last seven games (9g, 6a), including two hat tricks... Dennis Mullen was placed on the season-ending injured list Sunday... Mike Garrow will miss the next couple of weeks with an ankle sprain... Mike McGhan, experiencing concussion-like symptoms, didn't make the trip... Samy Nasreddine, out with a back injury, is still at least a few weeks away from returning...
