Kingfish beat Pilots, 3-2 in overtime

Mike Kiesman tallied the game winner with time running out in overtimes and Niklas Sundberg turned aside 26 shots as the Kingfish beat the Pensacola Ice Pilots, 3-2 in overtime at the Centroplex.

The Kingfish jumped out to a 1-0 lead six and a half minutes into the first period. that Sam Paquet picked up the goal as he punched the puck past an out of position Maxime Gingras. The Pensacola netminder gave up a big rebound on a Jim Vickers shot from the point to set up Paquet. Dwayne Blais also added an assist on the goal.

The Ice Pilots rebounded in the second as they scored twice in the middle stanza to take a 2-1 lead after two. Kerry Ellis-Toddington's power play goal early in the second tied the game at one. Chris Minard and Kevin Cloutier added the assists.

Greg Pankewicz gave the Ice Pilots their only lead of the night as he slipped the puck past Niklas Sundberg on a breakway to give Pensacola a 2-1 lead. Matt Poapst and Louis Dumont added the assists.

Midway through the third, Marquis Mathieu slipped into an opening in the high slot and ripped a shot that beat Gingras to far side to tie the game up at two. Erik Adams and Sam Paquet hooked up for the assists on the power play goal.

Kiesman's game winner came as time expired in overtime to give the Kingfish the 3-2 win over the Ice Pilots. Mathieu and Blais hooked up to find Kiesman wide open in front of Gingras for the game winner.

Niklas Sundberg made 26 saves in the win and improves to 13-13-2 on the season.

The Kingfish host the Mississippi Sea Wolves tomorrow night at the Centroplex at 7:05 p.m. before heading on the road to battle the RiverBlades in Arkansas on Sunday.
