Aces Endure Miserable Weekend

December 23, 2002 - ECHL (ECHL)
Alaska Aces News Release

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Anchorage Aces will try to end an eight-game losing streak against Idaho this season when the Steelheads invade Sullivan Arena this weekend.

After taking tomorrow and Wednesday off to celebrate the Christmas holiday, the team returns to practice Thursday from 10:00 a.m.-Noon at Sullivan before opening the three-game set with Idaho (20-6-3 overall), beginning Friday night at 7:00 p.m. and continuing Saturday at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday at 5:00 p.m. The Steelheads have defeated Anchorage (9-19-1) five times in Boise and all three games at Sullivan over the weekend of October 25-27. The Aces will be looking to bounce back after being soundly whipped by red-hot San Diego, 5-0 and 7-1, Friday and Saturday. Jason Modopoulos set up Eric Landry for the only Anchorage goal of the series, which did not come until 14 minutes were left in Saturday's game.

The Aces and Costco welcome the Anchorage School District as their guests for Sunday's game. The team is providing coupons to every elementary and middle school in the district redeemable for two free tickets for children 14 and under with the purchase of one adult ticket. A drawing will be held during the actual game, with five lucky winners receiving $100 scholarships, generously provided by Costco. Students can enter the drawing by filling out the entry forms on the back of the coupons. Costco representative Jennifer Nason will be presenting the scholarship checks during the second intermission, while Anchorage School District Superintendent Carol Comeau will be dropping the ceremonial first puck.

Here's what else to look for at Sullivan Arena this weekend:

Friday, December 27--- "Sparky the Dog" from the Anchorage Fire Department will be in attendance along with his friend, the Fire Department Robot.

Saturday, December 28--- The "mites" take the ice in-between periods.

Sunday, December 29--- The Polar Ice Caps, a youth hockey club, skate between periods.

Despite being shut down this past weekend, Dean Larson remains tied for the league lead with 14 goals and third with 32 points. Yvan Corbin has dropped to sixth in the WCHL scoring race at 28 points. Both players have scored four goals head-to-head against Idaho, but the Steelheads have outscored the Aces 39-16, led by Chris Marinucci, who has five goals and nine assists in just six games against Anchorage.

All games are broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM and at www.anchorageaces.com or www.kfqd.com, with Jack Michaels calling the play-by-play. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off, presented by GCI.
