San Diego Extends Winning Streak To Seven
December 23, 2002 - ECHL (ECHL)
San Diego Gulls News Release
SAN DIEGO - So much for that slump. A few weeks ago the San Diego Gulls couldn't buy a win. They weren't scoring, they weren't hitting and the smoke coming out from head coach Steve Martinson's ears could've sent the Sports Arena down in ashes. But after seven straight wins, everything is back to "normal" with the Blue and Orange.
With the seven-game streak, San Diego (15-10-1) has moved a season-high five games above .500. More importantly, the Gulls are now just three points behind the Bakersfield Condors for second place in the West Coast Hockey League. They've also built a five point cushion over the fourth-place Long Beach Ice Dogs... Mark Pederson has been a key contributor to San Diego's recent success. He's riding a personal five-game point streak and has moved up to seventh in the league with 27 points (13g, 14a)... Dean Tiltgen has also scored in five straight games and is tied for the league lead with 14 goals... Clayton Read has quietly put together a career-high six-game point streak. He leads the Gulls with 16 assists... But the one guy who's posting the most impressive numbers is Trevor Koenig. Koenig is 6-0 with a 1.17 goals against average over his last six games. He's now second overall with 14 wins and a 1.99 GAA. He earned his third shutout of the year Friday and his 12th of his WCHL career, making him the all-time leader...
TRANSACTIONS:
Jamie Black is still on injured reserve with a hairline ankle fracture ... Sandro Sbrocca should be returning from the American Hockey League's Hershey Bears this week... Marc Busenburg and Rob Voltera still remain with Hershey...

Jan. 9: Come out and join the fun as all Gulls players will be participating in a skate session at the Horton Plaza ice rink. The players will be on hand for autographs, questions and skating from 4:30-7:30 p.m. (Note: this date was changed from the original scheduled date: Dec. 23)
LAST WEEK:
GULLS 5, Aces 0; at Anchorage, Friday, Dec. 20: Kevin Grant and Cory Cyrenne earned three points apiece and Koenig turned aside all 24 shots, leading the Gulls to an easy five-goal win. San Diego struck once in the first, but broke the game open with two more in both the second and third. The Gulls also went 3 for 5 with the man advantage, which made them 11 for their last 22 on the power play.
GULLS 7, Aces 1; at Anchorage, Saturday, Dec. 21: The rookies stole show as Mike McGhan notched four points and David Neale recorded three - both career highs - as San Diego cruised to its seventh straight win. The game was close after the first period; the Gulls only led by one. San Diego was up 2-0 when Dan Cousineau got whistled for a five-minute major penalty for kneeing. But just when the Aces had a chance to get back in the game, Cyrenne scored a short-hander to break the game open.
THIS WEEK:
The Gulls play in Long Beach Friday at 7:30 p.m. San Diego opens a season-long seven-game homestand starting Saturday night against Bakersfield. Jamie Black player beanies, presented by your San Diego County Toyota Dealers, will be given to the first 5,000 fans. The game will conclude with the Make-A-Wish jersey presentation. All games can be heard live on 1130AM-KSDO and at www.ksdo.com with Chris Ello calling the play-by-play.
