Dayton Bombers News Release

The Dayton Bombers Professional Hockey Team (11-15-5) went 1-0-2 in a "three games-in-three nights" sequence preceding the Christmas break. The Bombers lost in overtime on home ice against Atlantic City, earned a point in a shootout loss at Cincinnati, then scored an overtime win at the Nutter Center in a rematch with the Boardwalk Bullies.

Below is a review of the three Bombers' games played this past weekend:

12/20/02- Atlantic City 6 @ BOMBERS 5 (OT)

The Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies rallied to tie with a pair of goals in the last 7:26, then won the game in overtime on a goal by Kevin Colley at 1:37. The Bombers scored two shorthanded goals (Jamie Ling and Tom Nemeth) and added a power play goal (Nemeth). Matt Poapst and Ryan Vince also tallied for the Bombers, who were outshot by Atlantic City 47-32. Brian Cummings finished with two assists for the Bombers. Jimmy Henkel had two goals and an assist for the Boardwalk Bullies. His goal while Atlantic City had the goalie pulled tied the game with less than four seconds remaining in regulation. Kirk Furey, Paul Spadafora, and Scott Matzka also had scores for the Boardwalk Bullies.

12/21/02 - BOMBERS 3 @ Cincinnati 4 (SO)

Chris M. Thompson's slap shot goal through a screen while his team had an extra attacker with nine seconds left helped the Dayton Bombers earn a point in a 4-3 shootout loss to the Cincinnati Cyclones at the US Bank Arena in downtown Cincinnati. Defenseman Steve Gallace scored an unassisted goal on a breakaway with 1:27 remaining to break a 2-2 tie before Thompson's tally, which came after a cross-ice feed by Tom Nemeth. Ryan Vince extended a team season-high point scoring streak to nine with a pair of goals, one of which was on the power play. Goalie Andrew Allen stopped 39 shots in the shootout loss. Greg Labenski and Joe Cardarelli scored regulation goals for Cincinnati. Evan Cheverie's tally in the sixth round of the shootout proved decisive.

12/22/02 - Atlantic City 4 @ BOMBERS 5 (OT)

Forward Ryan Vince scored two goals and assisted on Chris M. Thompson's game-winning goal one minute into the 4-on-4 overtime session as the Dayton Bombers beat the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies 5-4 in the team's final game before the Christmas break. Vince moved into the Atlantic City zone and sent a centering pass to Thompson, who scored as he was falling to the ice. The goal was Thompson's seventh of the season. Vince opened the game with a short-handed goal at 3:16 of the first period. Defenseman Jason Crain, just back from Syracuse of the AHL, hit the post on a short-handed slap shot, but Vince followed up on the rebound for the conversion. After a pair of unassisted goals by Atlantic City's Kevin Colley, Torrey DiRoberto tied the game at two for the Bombers with his first of two goals at 11:23 of the second period on a pass from Matt Poapst. Defenseman Tom Nemeth, who extended a point-scoring streak to six, also assisted on the goal. Shawn Maltby made it 3-2 Atlantic City at 11:05 of the third period on a power play goal, but Vince answered for the Bombers on a rebound chance at 14:01 for his tenth goal of the season. DiRoberto broke the 3-3 tie 1:09 later on a slap shot goal after a drop pass from Thompson, but Atlantic City rallied to tie within the last minute for the third consecutive night when Jade Galbraith put in a rebound at 19:03. Andrew Allen made 25 saves for the Bombers in the win. In addition to scoring a short-handed goal, the Bombers killed off eight of nine Atlantic City power plays.
