Aces earn point in 3-2 shootout loss

Alaska Aces News Release

ANCHORAGE, AK – Colin Zulianello stopped all five Alaska attempts in the shootout as Idaho rallied for a 3-2 victory in front of 3,669 Wednesday at Sullivan Arena.

The game offered a complete role reversal, as the Steelheads battled back from a 2-0 deficit to force overtime one night after coughing up a 2-0 advantage and losing a 3-2 shootout to the Aces. Alaska looked well on its way to keeping its win streak intact as Joe Talbot took advantage of a failed clearing attempt by Idaho defenseman Jonathan Zion and beat Zulianello five-hole just 3:24 into the first period for his 10th goal of the year. Mike Jones gave the Aces a 2-0 lead when he faked a slap shot from the point and fed a wide-open Charles Linglet on an Alaska power play at 10:22.

But that would be all for the Aces against Zulianello, who finished with 31 saves through regulation and overtime. In the meantime, Frank Lukes broke through against Alaska starter Peter Aubry (22 saves) with 5:28 remaining in the first period to trim the deficit in half. While on the power play midway through the second period, the Aces gave up a shorthanded goal for just the second time this year when Brett Draney finished off a two-on-one following a perfect feed from Zion, who atoned for his earlier miscue to help tie the game 2-2. Neither club scored in the third period, overtime, or the first four rounds of the shootout, but Bobby Russell came up with the winner in the fifth and final round for Idaho (17-13-3), who earned the extra point when Zulianello stopped Mike Scott.

Alaska came up just shy in its bid to tie the club record for most consecutive victories with seven, achieved three times, most recently in March of 1999. The Aces nevertheless will hold down third place in the West Division at 19-12-3 when they play host to fourth-place Fresno (17-13-4) at Sullivan Arena Friday and Saturday at 7:15 p.m.

Both games will be broadcast live on flagship station KFQD 750 AM and at www.alaskaaces.com, where Alaska's home games and selected road contests also can be seen on a pay-per-view basis, courtesy of B2 Networks. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to face-off.
