Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Victoria, BC – The Victoria Salmon Kings had lost seven straight heading into Wednesday night's game against the Long Beach Ice Dogs. By the end the score once again was not in their favor.

Heading into the third period the Salmon Kings trailed the Ice Dogs 3-0. At 6:48 of the first, Cory Urquhart opened the scoring with his eighth of the season. Marco Rosa and Rod Butler had assists on the play.

Just over a minute later David Walker beat the Salmon Kings goaltender, Jason Stone, on the power-play and the Ice Dogs led by two going to the dressing room after one.

The Salmon Kings were unable to muster any offence in the second and Long Beach started to pull away. Ice Dogs scoring leader Chris Kenady added to his totals setting up Evan Cheverie with less than twenty seconds to play in the period. Nathan Martz recorded the other assist and the Ice Dogs went to the room up 3-0.

Salmon Kings forward Rob Voltera scored his thirteenth of the season early in the third, set up by defensemen Peter Trumbley and Dale Purinton. Long Beach was not about to let the Salmon Kings back into the game though. Three minutes later David Walker got his second of the game on the power-play. Nathan Martz and Chris Kenady were in on the goal again.

At 9:40 of the third, Purinton and Voltera set up Seth Leonard's ninth goal of the season. But as has been the story for the past month for the Salmon Kings, just as they looked to have some momentum they gave it right back. Forty-five seconds after Leonard beat Ice Dogs goalie Olivier Michaud, Trevor Read passed the puck to Evan Cheverie who potted his fourteenth of the campaign.

At 12:40, Chris Kenady finished off his three point night with a power-play goal. Nathan Martz notched his third assist and David Walker also had one, finishing the night with two goals and an assist.

The Salmon Kings have squandered six or more goals in four of their past five games and goaltender Jason Stone has been the starter twenty-one straight. Victoria continues its west coast swing in Las Vegas on Friday before returning to Long Beach on Saturday and Sunday. The Salmon Kings will return home to face Long Beach on Tuesday January 18, 2005 at Bear Mountain Arena. Tickets are still available by calling 220-7777 or on-line at www.selectyourtickets.com.
