LONG BEACH, Calif. – Tomas Kapusta scored the game-winner with 3:27 left in regulation as the Long Beach Ice Dogs emerged with a hard-fought 4-3 decision over the Anchorage Aces before 1,253 Wednesday night at Long Beach Arena.

Long Beach dominated the majority of the first period, outshooting the Aces 14-6 and breaking out to a 1-0 lead on a goal by Tomas Hradecky at 5:39. Christian Soucy prevented Hradecky from doing further damage by stoning the second-year pro on a breakaway with five seconds left in the opening frame.

At the tail end of an excellent shift, the Aces' top line of Carl Drakensjo, Dean Larson, and Yvan Corbin hooked up for the equalizer at 5:03 of the second period, with Drakensjo stuffing a Corbin rebound past Long Beach netminder Mike Buzak. The Ice Dogs quickly regained the lead on a Jeff Ewasko redirection in front of Soucy at 8:17 for a 2-1 edge despite being outshot by the Aces 13-5 during the middle frame.

Anchorage scored for the first time in the third period this season when Corbin beat Buzak at 1:27 to tie the game at 2-2. With less than seven minutes remaining, Long Beach captain Chris Kenady banged home a rebound to push the Ice Dogs back into the lead. But for the third time, the Aces rallied, as Corbin fed Kimbi Daniels for a slapshot that whistled past Buzak 's blocker side with 5:26 showing on the clock. After a scramble in front of the Anchorage net, Kapusta tucked the go-ahead goal just inside the far post from deep in the right circle against a screened Soucy.

Corbin finished with a goal and two assists and Larson added two helpers for the Aces (1-7), who were outshot 30-26 in losing their fifth straight.

Tuesday, Anchorage waived first-year winger Chris Hills, who played at the University of Vermont but appeared in only one contest for the Aces. With 19 players, Anchorage has one active and one injured reserve spot available on its roster.

The Aces and Ice Dogs, who evened their record at 2-2, resume their three-game series Friday night at 6:30 p.m. ADT. All games are broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM and at www.anchorageaces.com or www.kfqd.com with Jack Michaels calling the play-by-play. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off.
