Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

Tonight's Match-up

The Aberdeen IronBirds go for their third consecutive series win tonight against the Vermont Lake Monsters (Class-A Short-Season affiliate of the Oakland A's). Aberdeen took two of three at the Tri-City ValleyCats then beat the Lake Monsters twice at Ripken Stadium. After dropping the opener of this three-game series, the IronBirds beat the Lake Monsters yesterday 9-4. Sammie Starr and Joe Velleggia both homered in the victory. Mike Wright allowed two runs on six hits on the way to his first professional win. The IronBirds will go for the series win with right-hander Parker Bridwell on the bump. Bridwell picked up his second win of the season in his last start, which came against Vermont. He'll go up against right-hander Kyle Wunderlich.

Shining Starr

In yesterday's win, Starr went 2-for-5 with his first career home run. He scored twice and knocked in four runs, which is a season-high for an IronBirds hitter. Starr got the start at shortstop yesterday. It was the first time somebody other than Mychal Givens manned short this season.

Better than your average Joe

Velleggia blasted his fourth home run in yesterday's victory. The big first baseman leads the team in homers and runs batted in (16). Velleggia has hit safely in his last five games.

Davis Keeps Hitting

Glynn Davis went 1-for-3 with a double and two runs scored in yesterday's win against Vermont. Davis has not hit safely in eight straight games. The hitting streak is a season-high for an IronBirds hitter.

Hot Bats

The IronBirds are getting hot at the plate. Over the past five games against Vermont, the team is hitting .286 with five homers. They have scored 29 runs, an average of nearly six runs per game. On the season, Aberdeen is averaging just 3.2 runs per game.

Dudley Do-Right

Second baseman Dudley Leonora went 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored in yesterday's victory. Leonora has multiple hits in a team-leading 11 games this season. He's hit safely in his past six games and has his batting average up to .280. In the month of July, Leonora is batting .320, which leads the team.
