
IronBirds Win Second Straight at Vermont

Burlington, VT - The Aberdeen IronBirds defeated the Vermont Lake Monsters Monday evening 10-5 in the rubber match of their three-game series. The win cements the IronBirds' third consecutive series win.
Joe Velleggia gave the IronBirds a two-run lead in the first inning. With Mychal Givens at first - after reaching on a single - and two men out, Velleggia blasted his team-leading fifth homer of the season.
Aberdeen blew the game open in the fourth inning when they sent nine batters to the plate. Velleggia and Wynston Sawyer hit back-to-back singles. Connor Narron grounded into a fielder's choice, putting runners at first and third. Chris Clinton was hit by a pitch. Dudley Leonora lifted a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Velleggia. Martin Serrata hit an RBI-single to center field, scoring Narron, and making it 4-0.
The IronBirds weren't done. With Serrata at first and Clinton at third, Glynn Davis stepped up to the plate. On a pitch home, Serrata took off for second. On the throw to second, Clinton broke for home. The throw went into center field. Serrata broke for third. The throw from the centerfielder Aaron Shipman to third was wild, allowing Serrata to score. Two errors were assessed on the play, as Aberdeen took a 6-0 lead.
The game went into an hour-and-36-minute rain-delay before the start of the bottom of the fourth. Starter Parker Bridwell did not re-enter following the delay. In three scoreless innings, Bridwell surrendered no walks and just one hit. He struck out two.
Orioles 2011 ninth-round pick Devin Jones entered the game in the fourth. He found himself in trouble in the fifth inning. Jacob Tanis started off the inning by a grounding a ball to Givens at short. He threw the ball wildly to first, allowing Tanis to get to second. Tanis would eventually scored from third on a wild pitch, putting the Lake Monsters on the scoreboard.
Aberdeen got the run back in their half of the sixth. The IronBirds put runners on the corners after Leonora and Serrata hit back-to-back singles. With Sammie Starr at the plate, Serrata tried to steal second. He got into a run-down, allowing Leonora to score from third.
Vermont scored their second run in their half of the sixth. With runners on the corners and nobody out, Chad Lewis lifted a sacrifice fly to right field.
The Lake Monsters continued to chip away in the seventh. Sam Roberts hit a two-out single. Aaron Shipman followed that up with a double, putting runners on second and third. Sean Jamieson hit a two-run single, making it 7-4.
The IronBirds broke the game open in the ninth inning. They sent eight batters to the plate and scored three runs on three hits and three walks.
Vermont tacked on a run on two hits and two walks in the ninth to make it a 10-5 final.
Jones (1-0) was credited with the win. He surrendered two runs, one earned, in three innings of work. Kurt Wunderlich (0-4) took the loss. Angel Cespedes (2) pitched the final three innings for the save.
The IronBirds return to Ripken Stadium Tuesday to open up a two-game series with the Brooklyn Cyclones. Right-hander Jake Cowan (0-3, 3.98) will be on the mound for the IronBirds. He'll go up against right-hander Eduardo Aldama (2-0, 1.93).
