Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release

WAPPINGERS FALLS, NY - The Connecticut Tigers scored five runs on just one hit in the eighth inning to win their second straight game, taking down the Hudson Valley Renegades 8-3 on Monday afternoon at Dutchess Stadium.

The Tigers jumped on top early with a two-run second inning. After a Jeff Holm strikeout to start the frame, Matt Perry followed with a double and Patrick Leyland slapped a single to put runners at the corners. Javier Azcona then smacked a double to score both runners and give Connecticut a 2-0 lead.

Hudson Valley cut the deficit to one on a Matt Rice solo home run to start the sixth inning, but the Tigers got the run back in the seventh. With the bases loaded Chad Wright drew a walk to put Connecticut on top 3-1.

In the bottom of the seventh the Renegades would tie the game without any hits in the inning. Raymond Church was hit by a pitch with one out, followed by a Chris Winder walk. Juniel Querecuto then reached on an error by Tigers first baseman Dean Green to score Church, while Rice hit a sacrifice fly to score Winder and tie the game at three.

The wheels fell off for the Renegades in the eighth when reliever Andy Bass came in to pitch. He walked the first four batters he faced, including a walk of Perry with the bases loaded to give the Tigers the lead. Leyland followed with a two-run double and Connecticut finished the frame with five runs on just one hit.

For the second straight day the Tigers tied a season-high with eight runs scored. While Perry was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored and an RBI the day after his 24th birthday, Leyland finished the day 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI's. Azcona finished the day 2-for-4 with two RBI's.

Brennan Smith threw 6.1 strong innings, allowing only one earned run on seven hits, as Jeff Barfield earned his first win of the season out of the bullpen. Bass suffered his second loss for the Renegades to drop to 0-2 on the year.

The Tigers will finish the road trip with two games against the Tri-City ValleyCats, beginning tomorrow night. First pitch is set for 7:00 PM.
