-SPIKES FINISH SAWBUCK SERIES PHASE TONIGHT: The State College Spikes return to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park to meet the Williamsport Crosscutters in the third of a three-game series between the two teams. The Spikes and 'Cutters have met four times this season, with the home team winning all but one contest. Williamsport leads the all-time series, 36-29, but State College has taken 16 of 32 games at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
-LAST GAME: The State College Spikes took advantage of Williamsport Crosscutters wildness and nearly completed a comeback attempt in the late innings, but fell just short in a 3-2 defeat on Sunday evening at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Carlos Mesa and Derek Trent both had a pair of hits that included a double, but it was the Spikes' legs that earned them their runs on the night, with Samuel Gonzalez and Chris Lashmet crossing the plate on wild pitches. The Spikes loaded the bases in both the seventh and ninth innings, but could not score in either frame.
-COOPER GETS START FOR SPIKES: Right-hander Jordan Cooper gets the ball for State College tonight. Cooper, the Pirates' 23rd-round draft pick out of the University of Kentucky in 2011, will look for his first pro victory tonight. The Shelbyville, TN native has allowed eight runs, six of them earned, over his first 5 2/3 innings as a professional, but has elicited three double plays as well.
-'CUTTERS GIVE BALL TO MORGAN: Williamsport will go with left-hander Adam Morgan on the mound tonight to create an all-SEC pitching matchup. Morgan was chosen by the Phillies out of the University of Alabama in the third round of the 2011 draft after going 5-7 with a 4.64 ERA as a junior this past spring. Morgan has made two professional starts and has allowed just one earned run in seven innings of work.
