Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

Tonight's Match-up

The IronBirds will try to make it two wins in-a-row tonight against the Hudson Valley Renegades (Class-A Short-Season affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays). Right-hander Parker Bridwell was electric last night, tossing five shutout innings in the ‘Birds opening day 7-2 win. He struck out nine batters and threw just 66 pitches. Aberdeen is hoping to get a similar pitching performance tonight out of right-hander Jake Cowan. A 2009 IronBird, Cowan is hoping to get his pro career back on track after missing most of last season with shoulder issues. He'll go up against right-hander Jason McEachern.

Opening Day Win

With last night's victory over the Renegades, the IronBirds improved to 6-4 overall in season openers. Aberdeen is now 4-2 against Hudson Valley on opening days.

Bridwell's Brilliance

Bridwell dominated the Renegades over five innings last night at Ripken Stadium. The 19-year-old struck out a career-high nine batters. Those nine strikeouts tied Ryan Schwabe's IronBirds record for most strikeouts on opening night. Schwabe K'd nine batters in an 8-1 loss to the Renegades on opening night in 2005. The IronBirds pitchers combined to strikeout 15 Renegades, which is a new Aberdeen opening day record.

Nowak's Walks

Right-fielder Jeremy Nowak walked a career-high three times last night. Last season in Aberdeen, Nowak struggled with his pitch selection. The former 13th round pick walked just 17 times in 52 games. He struck out 56 times in 2010.

Knight's Night

In front of a full house at Ripken Stadium, and 25 of his closest friends and family, Austin Knight led the IronBirds' offensive attack with three hits, an RBI, and a run scored. Knight's career-high for hits in a game came last year, when he stroked four base knocks against the Renegades on July 26th.

Cooney and Gamboa

The IronBirds bullpen is fortunate to have a couple of rehabbers from Double-A Bowie. Eddie Gamboa tossed three scoreless innings last night, and is expected to make another appearance for the ‘Birds. Brandon Cooney will pitch an inning for the IronBirds tonight.
