State College Spikes News Release
-SPIKES HEAD BACK TO BOWMAN TONIGHT: The State College Spikes look to even up their season-opening series of 2011 as they return to Historic Bowman Field to take on the Williamsport Crosscutters tonight. The SawBuck Series now stands at 1-0 in favor of Williamsport this season, and the âCutters also lead the all-time series, 33-28.
-LAST GAME: Carlos Mesa and Samuel Gonzalez each debuted for the Spikes with multi-hit games, but the Williamsport Crosscutters gave Nick Kingham a rude welcome to the New York-Penn League to take the win, 7-0, at Historic Bowman Field Friday night in the 2011 season opener for both teams. The âCutters scored five runs off of Kingham in the third innings, with homers by Bob Stumpo and Maikel Franco keying the effort. Taylor Lewis also reached base three times for the Spikes in his first game with the club.
-HAFNER MAKES FIRST PRO START: Right-hander Ryan Hafner takes the hill tonight for State College in his first appearance of the season and first start as a professional. Hafner, the 17th round pick of the Spikes in the 2010 MLB Draft, made two single-inning outings for the Gulf Coast League Pirates in 2010, going 0-1 and allowing two runs in that span. The Lee's Summit, MO native was an All-Conference selection at Lee's Summit West High.
-NESSETH HEADS TO MOUND FOR âCUTTERS: The Crosscutters will go with right-hander Mike Nesseth in game two of the series. Nesseth had his 2010 college season at Nebraska curtailed by Tommy John surgery on his right elbow, but was selected by the Phillies in the 17th round of the 2010 MLB Draft. Nesseth is making his professional debut tonight.
-CUBAN MESA JOINS CLUB: Carlos Mesa joined the Spikes prior to their season opener on Friday after a long journey. The 23-year-old left Cuba and came to America to sign with the Pirates this spring. Mesa started in right field and went 2-for-4 against the Crosscutters.
