Albuquerque Isotopes News Release

Oklahoma starter Derek Lee and a duo of relievers held the potent Albuquerque offense to just one run on five hits as the RedHawks (25-30) defeated the Isotopes (33-23) 4-1 Friday night at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark. The setback is the ‘Topes' fourth in a row and fifth straight at the hands of Oklahoma this season.

RedHawks hurler Lee (1-2) cruised through seven strong innings, allowing just one run on four hits while walking two and striking out six en route to his first win of the season. The left-hander gave way to Antonio Alfonseca, on loan from Texas making his second rehabilitation assignment in as many days, who threw a five-pitch scoreless eighth before handing the ball to ex-Isotope Bryan Corey (6), who nailed down his sixth save, and third in this series against his former mates, after striking out two of the four batters he faced in a scoreless ninth.

Isotopes starter Jason Vargas (1-1), making his first appearance away from Isotopes Park, pitched his longest outing of the season, going seven innings and allowing three runs on seven hits while walking none and striking out five, but nonetheless suffered his first defeat of the year.

Unlike the previous three games in the series, Albuquerque jumped out on top first, scoring a run in the top of the second when Scott Seabol led off the frame with a double, advanced to third on a groundout by Tom Wilson, and came in to score on a groundout by Paul Hoover to give the ‘Topes a 1-0 lead. Seabol's double extended his current hitting streak to eight games.

Oklahoma roared back in the bottom of the third thanks to left fielder Adrian Brown, who lined a two-run homer to left off of Vargas to help the ‘Hawks seize back the lead by the score of 2-1. The RedHawks added one more in the bottom of the third when Joaquin Arias hit a lead-off double, advanced to third on a fly ball by Adam Hyzdu, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Laynce Nix to increase the advantage to 3-1 Oklahoma.

The ‘Hawks would add one final insurance run in the bottom of the eighth by manufacturing a lead-off walk. After speedy Freddy Guzman drew a lead-off free pass from ‘Topes reliever Chris Resop, he promptly swiped second base. Drew Meyer then flied out to left-center allowing Guzman to take third, and two batters later, Nix drove home Guzman with a single to center to make the score 4-1.

Albuquerque will look to get back on the winning track tomorrow when they head to Nashville for its first meeting with the defending PCL Champion Sounds. The Isotopes will throw left-hander Renyel Pinto (3-1, 2.70), fresh off a stint with the Marlins, to the mound, while Nashville will counter with lefty Zack Jackson (2-2, 3.00). The ‘Topes return home on June 8. Tickets are available at the Isotopes Park Box Office, Ticketmaster outlets and on-line at www.albuquerquebaseball.com.
