Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK - What could have been one of Luke Scott's biggest hits of the season Friday turned into one of Round Rock's toughest losses of the year.
Trailing by four at one point, the Express rallied to take a 5-4 lead against Memphis in the eighth inning, again rallied to tie it 7-7 in the ninth and nearly tied the game again with one down in the 10th before falling 8-7 in front of 10,713 fans at The Dell Diamond.
The extra-innings loss - the longest of the season for Round Rock at 4 hours and 18 minutes - kept the Express 1 ½ games behind Albuquerque in the Pacific Coast League's American Southern division.
Albuquerque fell 4-1 at Oklahoma earlier Friday.
Trailing 8-7 in the bottom of the 10th, Joe McEwing led off with a walk for Round Rock. Ex-Express pitcher Travis Smith got Brooks Conrad to fly out before Scott drilled his seventh double of the year to left field.
McEwing raced around from first, sliding for home just as shortstop Kevin Estrada relayed the throw to catcher Michel Hernandez, who applied the tag in time for out number two.
Smith, who picked up his second win of the series against Round Rock, then got Royce Huffman to fly out, ending the game at 11:23 p.m.
Round Rock takes on the Omaha Royals (Kansas City Royals) in the first of a four-game set Saturday at 7:05 p.m. at The Dell Diamond.
