Tucson Sidewinders News Release
Fresno - The Tucson Sidewinders took a 2-1 lead into the ninth inning and scored four times in the ninth to beat the Fresno Grizzlies 6-1 on Thursday night at Grizzlies Stadium. The win improved Tucson to 31-24 on the season and kept them in first place in the Pacific Southern division.
Five different Sidewinders recorded RBI as the Sidewinders scored six runs on just six hits. Alberto Callaspo, Chris Young, Carlos Quentin, Donnie Sadler and Chris Carter all drove home runs.
Trailing 1-0 entering the second, Tucson tied the game with two outs and nobody on base. Robby Hammock walked and Sadler tripled to right-center to knot the contest at one.
The game remained tied until the seventh inning. With two outs, reliever Mike Bacsik was allowed to hit for himself and lined a single to left, keeping his perfect average intact. Callaspo then tripled to the gap in right-center to score Bacsik all the way from first and give the Sidewinders a 2-1 lead.
Bacsik is now 3-3 as a hitter this season and also earned the win in relief. The Sidewinders lefty pitched 1 1/3 innings and allowed just one hit to improve his record to 4-0 on the season.
Fresno starter Michael Tejera took the loss. Tejera (3-2) pitched seven innings and allowed just five hits and two runs. He struck out three and walked two.
The Sidewinders bullpen provided strong relief work behind starter Bill Murphy. Murphy worked the first four innings and allowed one run. Jeff Bajenaru, Bacsik, Casey Daigle and Greg Aquino went the final five innings and gave up just three hits between them.
Tucson broke the game open in the ninth by scoring four runs without a hit. Grizzlies reliever Erick Threets walked the bases loaded and Chris Young's sacrifice fly plated one run. After Hairston was hit by a pitch to re-load the bases, Carlos Quentin was hit by a pitch to drive home a run and Chris Carter's ground ball scored another. Carter then stole second and Guillermo Rodriguez's throw was wide, allowing Hairston to score from third.
Quentin has been hit 20 times in just 51 games. He leads all of minor league baseball in that category.
Fresno scored a run in the first inning on a single by Todd Linden that scored Fred Lewis.
The Sidewinders and Grizzlies wrap up their four game series on Friday night at Grizzlies Stadium. Right-hander Dustin Nippert (7-0 3.46) goes for Tucson against right-hander Pedro Liriano (0-2 6.75) for Fresno. First pitch is at 7:05. The game will air live on COOL 1450 beginning at 6:50.
