
\'Dogs Suffer Largest Loss in Team History, 18-1

(Portland, ME) - The Reading Phillies (66-56) scored nine runs off losing pitcher LHP Kason Gabbard (0-4) in 3+ innings and defeated the Portland Sea Dogs (59-62) 18-1 on Wednesday night at Hadlock Field. Reading clinched the season series (4-2) as the two teams play the rubber match-up of their 3-game series tomorrow night.
LHP Yohan Flande (3-3) notched his 5th consecutive quality start for the Phillies to earn his 3rd win of the season. Flande pitched six innings, yielding three hits on one run with two walks and four strikeouts. Gabbard suffered his 4th loss in five appearances, surrendering nine runs (all earned) on eight hits but seven walks. The lefty has walked 14 batters in his last 5.2 IP.
The Phillies had 30 baserunners, picking up 20 hits, 9 walks and a hit batter. Reading's top four batters scored 11 of the 18 runs and combined to go 10-for-21 (.476), HR and 9 RBI. The entire R-Phils lineup had at least one hit with batters 6-9 picking up multi-RBI games.
C Luis Exposito provided Portland's lone run of the game, blasting a Maine Monster homer to lead off the fifth inning. The 17-run defeat was the largest loss in team history; the Sea Dogs suffered a 16-0 loss to the Norwich Navigators on May 1, 2004.
Reading sent nine men to the plate in the first inning, scoring four runs off Gabbard on two hits and four walks. CF Quintin Berry led off the game with a single, LF Michael Spidale and RF Dominic Brown walked to load the bases. 3B Neil Sellers drove in his 71st run with a fielder's choice, DH Steve Susdorf walked and SS Ozzie Chavez delivered a 2-run single.
Brown smacked a run-scoring double in the second inning to improve Reading's lead to 5-0. Gabbard worked out of further damage retiring Sellers on a fly out and inducing a 6-4-3 double play off the bat of C Tim Kennelly. The Phillies did not let up offensively off Gabbard, knocking the lefty out in the fourth inning when five straight batters reached base - 4 four singles and a walk. Brown and Mahar drove in three runs with singles, Mahar scored on a wild pitch by LHP Tommy Hottovy.
Sellers (single) and C Tim Kennelly (double) added run-scoring hits in the fifth inning to extend Reading's lead to 12-1. In the seventh, Mahar blasted a 2-run homer off RHP Chad Rhoades. Spidale added an RBI single in the eighth off RHP Richie Lentz. LHP Dustin Richardson yielded the final three runs in the ninth inning on run-scoring doubles by Susdorf and 2B Brad Harman.
