Aerodynamics...
Dirty Dozen...It was a tale of two ballgames at Canal Park last night, as Akron scored the final eight runs of the game following a 50-minute rain delay and rolled to a 12-3 triumph over Bowie in front of 3,788 fans. The Aeros had just taken a 4-3 lead on a bases-loaded walk by Baysox reliever James Hoey in the bottom of the sixth when the rain halted play, and Akron then pounded the Bowie relief corps once play resumed. 1B Beau Mills drilled a two-run double in the sixth to make it 6-3, and the Aeros then sent 10 men to the plate and tacked on six insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth. Akron improved to 15-8 against the Baysox this season and stretched its lead in the Southern Division to a season-high 9.5 games over the Reading Phillies.
Spelling Relief...Left-hander Scott Barnes made his Canal Park debut last night in his second start for the Aeros and battled through 5.1 innings while allowing three runs on six hits. It was the three pitchers who followed him out of the bullpen who really shined for Akron however, as RHPs Zach Putnam, Carlton Smith and Neil Wagner combined for 3.2 shutout innings while allowing just one base hit. Smith and Wagner were particularly effective, as the duo retired the final nine Baysox batters in order (Smith in the seventh and eighth, and Wagner in the ninth).
First Things First...Mills paced Akron offensively last night, collecting three of the club's 12 hits and driving in three runs also. The native of Visalia, CA suffered through a rough night on his 23rd birthday last Saturday at New Britain as he finished 0-4 with two strikeouts and also committed an error at first base. In the two games since then however, Mills has gone 4-8 with a double, a homer, a run scored, and five RBI. Mills also leads the Aeros with 36 multi-hit games this year and is hitting .278 with four homers, 20 RBI, and a .452 slugging percentage in 28 games since the All-Star break (he hit .259 with seven homers, 47 RBI, and a .388 slugging percentage in 90 games before the break).
Rolling on the Rivero...SS Carlos Rivero had another fine effort last night, reaching base three times thanks to a double and a pair of walks while also driving in an important run in the fifth with a sacrifice fly. The 21-year-old is now batting .297 (51-172) with 19 walks, 10 doubles, six homers, 22 runs scored and 24 RBI in his last 49 games dating to June 26th, and his .238 batting average entering play tonight is the highest it's been since April 15th. Additionally, Connecticut's Brandon Crawford committed an error last night and dropped his fielding percentage to .968 for the season, meaning Rivero's .970 mark is back to being the best among all Eastern League shortstops.
Magic Men...With last night's win, Akron lowered its magic number to clinch the division to 12 over Reading. It was originally thought to be 11, but the Phillies still have a scheduled double header on September 5th.
