Defenders Escape With 5-3 Win Over Fisher Cats

MANCHESTER, NH- What a difference a day makes. After a disappointing loss last night, Connecticut almost let another slip away Wednesday but managed to surge ahead and pull off a 5-3 victory over New Hampshire at MerchantsAuto.com Stadium.

With two aboard and two out in the ninth, 3B-Brad Boyer slapped a shot to in the hole on the left side of the infield in which SS-Manny Mayerson made a fantastic diving stop but then threw it wide of 2B-Brad Emaus covering the second base bag into right field. Two runs came into score and Connecticut held on to claim game two.

The Defenders took an early advantage in the third inning on a CF-Mike McBryde RBI single to plate RF-Mike Mooney who leadoff with a single.

Connecticut padded their lead in the fifth. After back to back singles, Boyer ripped an RBI single to plate C-Jackson Williams. 1B-Brett Pill then beat out a double play ball which allowed McBryde to score and the Defenders had a 3-0 lead.

New Hampshire, as always found their way back in the ballgame in the sixth after a leadoff single by 3B-Scott Campbell and then received a huge two run homer by 2B-Brad Emaus to trim the lead to one.

Defenders' starter RHP-Daryl Maday would leave the ballgame with the lead allowing just two earned runs off of three hits, walked a season high four and tied a season high with five strikeouts in the no decision.

The Fisher Cats had a big chance in the seventh but did manage to tie the game. DH-Brian Van Kirk leadoff with a ground rule double, C-Brian Jeroloman reached on a bunt single and 3B-Scott Campbell drew a one out walk to load the bases. Emaus would come through again and drive in his third run of the game with a sac fly to deep center as Defenders reliever LHP-Dan Runzler would pitch out of the jam.

Defenders' closer LHP-Matt Yourkin earned his fourth save of the season striking out the side in the ninth.

Connecticut reliever RHP-Mitch Lively (2-0) earned the win tossing one solid inning allowing just one hit. New Hampshire reliever RHP-Zach Dials (1-3) suffered the loss allowing two unearned runs off of one hit, walked one and fanned one.

The teams will meet tomorrow in the series finale and Connecticut southpaw Madison Bumgarner (7-1) toes the bump against New Hampshire's RHP-Sean Smith (0-0). First pitch is slated for 7:05pm from MerchantsAuto.com Stadium.
