Chesapeake Baysox News Release
AKRON, Ohio - The Baysox offense managed just one hit and were shut-out by the Aeros 3-0 Wednesday night at Canal Park in Akron. Right-hander Tim Bascom was dealt his seventh straight loss, allowing three earned runs over 6.2 innings of work. Designated hitter Danny Figueroa had the only hit, an infield single with two outs in the top of the sixth inning as the Baysox were one-hit for the second time this season.
Lonnie Chisenhall helped put the Aeros on the board in the second inning. After Matt McBride doubled with one-out, Chisenhall followed with a two-run blast deep to right giving Akron a 2-0 lead. Bascom settled down after the home run, retiring the next 12 in a row heading into the bottom of the sixth inning.
Jerad Head led off the sixth with a single to center, advancing to second on a ground out by Jose Constanza. After Bascom got Josh Rodriguez looking on a called third strike, Carlos Santana drove home his 86th run of the season with a single to extend the Akron lead to three.
After walking 10 over his last 9.0 innings of work, Bascom did not walk a batter on the night while striking out seven. His counterpart, left-hander Eric Berger, held the Baysox without a hit through the first five innings in his third start in double-A. The southpaw walked two and struck out seven, on the way to earning his first win of the season for the Aeros.
Right-hander Luis Lebron came on to replace Bascom with two outs in the seventh. With Matt McBride at second, Lebron induced Carlos Rivero to ground out to end the inning and came back out to retire the Aeros in order in the eighth. The hard-throwing right hander has not allowed an earned run in 12 of his last 13 outings, and has not allowed a hit in 11 of his 17 appearances on the season for the Baysox.
Akron right-hander Erik Stiller worked 2.0 perfect innings in relief of Berger, striking out three. Right-hander Josh Judy came on to earn his seventh save of the season with a 1-2-3 ninth inning to give the Aeros their 76th win of the season. The Baysox did not move a runner past first base on the night, the first time they have been unable to move a runner into scoring position on the season.
With the loss, the Baysox fall to 63-59 and 12.5 games behind Akron for the Southern Division lead. They fall to 3.0 games back of Reading, who currently sits in second place. The Baysox will look to avoid the sweep tomorrow as they send RHP Steve Johnson (0-1, 3.00) to the mound against RHP Connor Graham (0-2, 5.19) for the Aeros. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
