Clinton LumberKings News Release

Clinton, IA - In front of a crowd of 5,441 the Clinton LumberKings fell to the Kane County Cougars 7-4 on the Fourth of July at Ashford University Field. The loss snaps the LumberKings (9-4 48-35) four game winning streak while bringing to an end a skid of five games by the Cougars (5-9, 40-43).

Kane County led throughout, taking the lead in the second inning and never letting go. Clinton starter Ray Kerr took the loss for a 3.2 inning outing in which he allowed five runs, four earned, on seven hits while walking three and striking out two.

The Cougars scored the game's first run in the top of the second, and unearned run, and then exploded for a four-run inning in the third. Kerr (3-8) issued all three of his walks in the inning and Ryan Grotjohn tripled off the wall in right to bring home the first run of the inning. Eudy Ramos followed two pitches later with a two-run homer to left center field, his fourth of the year.

In the top of the seventh, the Cougars added their last two runs of the night. Luis Silverio homered to right to open the inning, his third of the year, and the power then went out entering the game into a 19-minute delay. When the power returned, LumberKings reliever Tyler Jackson allowed an unearned run to Kane County on two errors that were charged to third basemen Zach Scott.

Of the LumberKings seven hits on the night five went for extra base hits, yet they managed to tally just one run against Cougars starter Jhoan Duran. In the bottom of the fifth, an Onil Pena double to right center led to Clinton's first run of the night.

Duran (5-3) earned the win for Kane County with a 5.2 inning outing while allowing four hits, walking four, and striking out four.

Clinton scored an unearned run in the seventh after a leadoff double by Scott to right center field. Still the LumberKings could turn the nine walks issued by Cougars pitching into a sustained rally.

In the bottom of the ninth, back-to-back leadoff walks and an RBI double by Ryan Costello to left set the stage for a late come back. Keegan McGovern drove home the second run of the inning with an RBI ground out and the LumberKings had the tying run at the plate when Erbert Gonzalez struck out the final two batters of the game to record his first save of the season.

The LumberKings will conclude their brief two-game meeting with the Kane County Cougars on Thursday night at Ashford University Field. Clinton will throw right-hander Scott Boches (2-1, 2.90) while the Cougars will counter with righty Brian Shaffer (3-5, 2.98). First pitch for game one is slated for 6:30 PM.
