Whitecaps Walk Their Way to Victory

LANSING, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps offense drew 12 walks, and Jesus Rodriguez tossed 7.2 solid innings as part of a 6-2 victory over the Lansing Lugnuts Thursday at Cooley Law School Stadium.

Rodriguez, coming off a start in which he surrendered eight runs in just three innings in a June 29 loss to the Bowling Green Hot Rods and set a Whitecaps season-high 7.2 frames on the mound. The game did not feature a 1-2-3 half inning at any point in the contest. The win gives the "Caps a 3-1 series victory in the four-game home-and-home series against the Lugnuts.

After a Rey Rivera RBI-single in the first, the Whitecaps exploded for four runs in an inning highlighted by a run-scoring double from Garrett McCain and RBI-single by Brock Deatherage. Brady Policelli stole home as part of a double-steal in the frame. The Whitecaps swiped a season-high five bags in the ballgame.

Meanwhile, Rodriguez (5-4) cruised through the first seven innings with just 72 pitches and struck out five in earning his fifth win of the year. Lansing starter Andrew Deramo (0-3) gave up five of the six West Michigan runs in suffering his third loss of 2018. With the victory, the Whitecaps improve their second-half record to 8-7 and overall mark to 44-41, while the Lugnuts drop to 10-5 in the second portion of the season, and 53-32 overall. McCain reached base four times with two doubles, two walks, two runs scored and a stolen base. The Whitecaps offense tied their season-record with 12 walks against Lansing pitchers.
