South Bend Cubs News Release

Bowling Green, KY: After two home games apiece in a four game series and 377 miles traveled, the South Bend Cubs took the decisive game four of their series against the Bowling Green Hot Rods on Thursday night. With a 3-0 shutout win, the Cubs get a win on the road against the team with the best record in the Midwest League before continuing the road trip tomorrow night in Lansing.

Behind quick offensive outbursts and solid pitching all night long, the Cubs cooled down the league's hottest offense to whitewash the Hot Rods. The South Bend stars showed up when it meant most in the final game of the series. Miguel Amaya got things going in the top of the 1st with a RBI single to score Christian Donahue.

Quickly, it was a 1-0 advantage for the Cubs. They kept the foot on the pedal entering the top of the 3rd inning. After being named this afternoon as the Chicago Cubs Minor League Player of the Month, Jared Young smashed his tenth home run of the season over the right field wall to make it 2-0. Young now ties Amaya for the team lead in round trippers this season.

The early run support was backed up by the starting pitching of Rollie Lacy. South Bend's ace continues to shine at the top spot in the rotation after no-hitting the Fort Wayne TinCaps earlier in June. In five innings, Lacy earned his fourth win of the season by striking out eight batters and not giving up a run.

Making his first appearance with the South Bend Cubs after being signed as a minor league free agent was southpaw Ryan Lawlor. In his debut, the lefty went two scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Ben Hecht added a pair of scoreless frames to earn his third save of the season.

South Bend added one final insurance run in the top of the 6th. Off of reliever Mikey York, Brandon Hughes led of the inning with a single into right field. On an error by the pitcher with a pickoff attempt, Hughes was brought to third base. Rafael Narea then drove him in to make the game 3-0.

With the win, the Cubs earn their 42nd win of the season and are back to .500 at 42-42. The team will now head north to Lansing to take on the Lugnuts in a showdown against another Midwest League playoff team. First pitch from Michigan's capital is set for 7:05 p.m.
