Today's Game: The Dayton Dragons (affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds) meet the Lake County Captains (affiliate of the Cleveland Indians) in the second game of a two-game set in Dayton.
Season Series to Date: Dayton 9, Lake County 5 (at Dayton: Dragons 8, Captains 1). The Dragons would clinch the season series with a win tonight.
Last Game: Wednesday: Dayton 3, Lake County 2. Jeter Downs scored from second base on an infield ground out and subsequent throwing error to break a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the eighth inning, and John Ghyzel pitched a perfect ninth for his 15th save. Dayton starting pitcher Packy Naughton was exceptional for the second straight outing, tossing seven scoreless innings. The Captains scored two in the top of the eighth to tie the game before Dayton broke the tie in the bottom of the same inning. Dayton had just five hits, including doubles by Downs, Andy Sugilio, and Alejo Lopez.
2018 Team Notes
With a win tonight, the Dragons would rise above the .500 mark in the second half for the first time. They began the half by losing their first four games, but they are 7-3 since.
The Dragons have committed just 10 errors in their last 25 games. They have committed just seven errors in the second half (14 games).
The Dragons rank second in the MWL in July ERA at 2.06 (Fort Wayne is first at 1.80).
The Dragons have allowed three runs or less in four straight games and nine of their 14 second half games. Their second half ERA is 3.73 (5.31 in the first half). Outside of two high-scoring games vs. South Bend, the Dragons team ERA in the second half would be 2.61 in the other 12 games (107 IP, 31 ER). The Midwest League average team ERA in 2018 is 3.95.
Transactions: On Wednesday, the Reds announced that they had acquired hard-throwing relief pitcher Aneurys Zabala in a trade with the Dodgers, and that Zabala, who was with Great Lakes, would be assigned to Dayton. An official roster move is pending. Outfielder Lorenzo Cedrola has been added to the Dayton roster after being acquired from the Boston Red Sox for international bonus pool space. First baseman Montrell Marshall has been placed on the restricted list.
2018 Individual Notes
Hunter Greene over his last eight starts: 43.1 IP, 30 H, 10 R, 9 ER, 9 BB, 51 SO, 1.87 ERA. Greene has made 15 starts. His ERA in his first seven starts was 10.06.
Packy Naughton over his last two starts: 13 IP, 9 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 8 SO, 0.00 ERA. Naughton has a current streak of 14 scoreless innings, the longest of the year by a Dayton pitcher.
Jose Garcia had a seven-game hitting streak snapped last night. Over his last eight games, he is batting .314 with three doubles and a triple. The streak has lifted Garcia's average from .196 to .212.
Leandro Santana is batting .309 over his last 18 games to raise his season's average from .190 to .229.
Malik Collymore has hits in nine of the 10 games he has played in with the Dragons, batting .333.
J.D. Williams has a five-game hitting streak, batting .412 (7 for 17).
Cory Thompson has posted a 1.99 ERA in 29 relief appearances. He leads the MWL in appearances.
John Ghyzel is first in the MWL lead in saves with 15. Ghyzel was the winning pitcher in the MWL All-Star Game on June 19.
