Stockton Ports News Release

STOCKTON, Calif. - The Stockton Ports, mired in a deep funk, seem to be finding new ways to lose close ballgames. The Ports were handed their seventh straight loss on Monday night and their ninth straight home loss by the Visalia Rawhide, with the winning run for Visalia scoring on a miscommunication during a routine pop fly to the infield in the top of the 11th inning. With the loss, Stockton remains in search of its first home win since May 20th.

Visalia scored the first run of the game a solo home run by Domingo Leyba in the top of the first. Stockton would score the next four runs of the game over the second and third innings. In the second. James Harris led off with a single and proceeded to score on three wild pitches. With two outs in the inning, Seth Brown and Iolana Akau coaxed back-to-back walks and Mikey White delivered an RBI single to center that gave Stockton a 2-1 lead.

The Ports added to their lead in the third. Melvin Mercedes led off with a home run to right, his first of the season and third of his career. Two batters later, Joe Bennie singled to left and Harris followed with a single that put runners at the corners with one out. Sandber Pimentel would ground out to first to drive in Bennie and make it a 4-1 Ports advantage.

Rawhide starter Emilio Vargas went four innings and allowed four runs on five hits while striking out five.

Visalia tied the game with its biggest inning of the night in the fourth. Rudy Flores led off with a home run to make it 4-2. Visalia would then go on to load the bases with one out. Ports starter Brett Graves induced a comebacker to the mound off the bat of Colin Bray that turned into a force out at home plate. With two outs, however, Victor Reyes delivered a two-run seeing-eye single up the middle to tie the game at 4-4.

Graves would go on to pitch the fifth and sixth without allowing another run and did not factor into the decision, going six innings and allowing four runs on seven hits while walking two.

R.J. Alvarez made his second Major League rehab appearance with Stockton as he pitched the seventh and gave up a two-out double to Leyba but nothing more. Alvarez threw 13 pitches, 10 for strikes.

Luis Ramirez (7-1) pitched three scoreless innings for Visalia beginning in the eighth while Corey Miller did the same for Stockton, also beginning in the eighth.

Joey Wagman (0-3) came on to pitch the 11th inning and saw Dawel Lugo reach on an error made by the first baseman Pimentel as he came off the bag prematurely on a throw over after a ground ball. Lugo would get to third base with two outs with Oscar Hernandez coming to bat. Hernandez hit a pop-fly back of the left side of the infield. Both the third baseman White and the shortstop Richie Martin were camped underneath, but a miscommunication allowed the ball to drop in and allowed Lugo to score the go-ahead run from third and give the Rawhide a 5-4 advantage.

The run would be unearned for Wagman who would suffer the loss following his lone inning of work.

Bud Jeter (SV, 6) pitched around a two-out single by Seth Brown in the bottom of the 11th to notch his sixth save. Ramirez picked up the win for the Rawhide.

The Ports and Rawhide wrap up their four-game set on Tuesday night at Banner Island Ballpark. Heath Fillmyer (3-4, 3.22 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by Visalia left-hander Cody Reed (0-1, 6.75 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. PDT.
