Inland Empire 66ers News Release
Rancho Cucamonga, CA- On a night where defensive virtuoso Andrelton Simmons played for the Inland Empire 66ers, it was the bats that made the music in an 8-5 win over the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes at LoanMart Field. The 66ers, led by Simmons' two hits (including a double) downed the Quakes to take a 2-1 game advantage in a four-game set.
The Quakes (34-24) got two runs in the first inning against Inland Empire starter Justin Anderson (2-6) on an RBI double from Devan Ahart and a RBI single from Matt Beaty. The Sixers tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth however against starter Tommy Bergjans (2-6) when Simmons doubled to left-center and came home on Taylor Ward's line drive single. Ward would eventually go to third on Michael Strentz' single and come home on a Bergjans' wild pitch. The Quakes did take a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth but it did not last long.
Inland Empire (20-38) unloaded on the Quakes in the sixth by sending ten men to the plate with six of them scoring. Inland Empire got a lead-off walk from Tim Arakawa followed by a Simmons' single. Hutton Moyer then notched a RBI single and Strentz followed with one of his own to score Simmons and make it 4-3. Bergjans was relieved by southpaw Jeff Malm and Wade Wass tallied a sac-fly making it 5-3. Zach Houchins then lowered the boom on a Malm offering for a two-run homer to left. It was seventh HR of the year, all on the road. IE was not finished as Ayendy Perez doubled and came home on Zach Welz' single to make it 8-3. The Sixers matched a season-best with six runs in the frame.
The Quakes tallied single runs in the seventh and eighth to cut the lead to 8-5 but Ronnie Muck slammed the door shut in the ninth with a pair of strikeouts including Johan Mieses who had homered earlier in the game. Muck earned his second save of the year.
The series concludes Tuesday at 7:05 pm. Simmons is expected to start at shortstop once again. The contest can be heard live at 66ers.com and 1570 AM KPRO.
