Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release

Rancho Cucamonga, CA - The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes blew a two-run lead and suffered a sixth-inning meltdown, losing to the Inland Empire 66ers, 8-5 on Monday night at LoanMart Field.

Rancho's loss, coupled with High Desert's 7-2 win at Lake Elsinore on Monday, pushed the Quakes to two games behind the Mavs in the South Division with 12 games remaining in the first half.

The Quakes jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Erick Mejia led off the frame with a double, and scored on a Devan Ahart RBI double to make it 1-0 Rancho. Beaty then ripped an RBI hit of his own, a single, to make it 2-0.

Inland Empire tied the ballgame at 2-2 by scoring a pair of runs in the fourth. Major league rehabber Andrelton Simmons doubled with one out, and scored on a Taylor Ward RBI single. The 66ers tied the game after Ward, who advanced to third base on Michael Strentz's single, scored after Quakes' starter Tommy Bergjans uncorked a wild pitch.

The Seesaw game continued in the fifth inning, when Rancho grabbed a one-run lead. Michael Ahmed led off the inning with a double, and ended up scoring on an RBI groundout by Ahart, to make 3-2.

After the fifth inning, it was all downhill for Rancho Cucamonga and Bergjans. The 66ers scored six sixth-inning runs, and sent 10 hitters to the plate. Tim Arakawa led off the inning with a walk, and Simmons singled to put runners on first and second with nobody out. A Hutton Moyer single tied the game at three, and then a double by Michael Strentz scored Simmons to give the 66ers the lead for good, with that hit chasing Bergjans.

Jeff Malm came in out of the Quakes bullpen and allowed a sacrifice fly to Wade Wass, a two-run home run by Zach Houchins and a Zach Welz RBI-single to account for the rest of the six-run inning, giving Inland Empire an 8-3 lead after six innings.

Bergjans' final line was 5.1 innings pitched, allowing six earned runs on six hits, while walking one and striking out eight. Malm allowed two earned runs in his two-thirds of an inning. Daniel Corcino and Bubby Rossman later combined to throw three scoreless innings in relief.

Rancho Cucamonga made a late-inning comeback bid in the seventh inning, when Julian Leon led off the frame with a single, and scored on an Erick Mejia double to make it an 8-4 contest.

In the eighth, Johan Mieses belted his ninth home run of the season, a solo shot, to make it 8-5. Edwin Rios followed by reaching on an error by the left fielder Ayendy Perez and Yusniel Diaz walked, to put runners at first and second base with nobody out. However, the threat ended quickly as Joey Curletta, Leon and Ahmed all struck consecutively to end the inning against 66ers' reliever Kevin Grendell.

The Quakes had 10 hits, including multi-hit games from Mejia (3-for-5) and Beaty (2-for-4). Rancho lost despite five extra-base hits (four doubles, one home run).

Justin Anderson (2-6) beat the Quakes for the first time in three tries this season. He pitched five innings and allowed three earned runs on seven hits, striking out four. Ronnie Muck tallied his second save of the season by pitching a scoreless ninth.

Rancho Cucamonga (34-24), looks to settle for a series split against the 66ers on Tuesday, and gain some ground in their two-game hole in the South Division standings. Inland Empire improves to 20-38 with the win. Rancho Cucamonga is now 10-3 against Inland Empire this season and is 4-2 against the 66ers at LoanMart Field. Josh Sborz (4-3, 3.06 ERA) will pitch for the Quakes on Tuesday, while Jeremy Rhoades (1-6, 6.41 ERA), will start for Inland Empire.

Rancho's Cucamonga's home stand concludes on Tuesday night when the Quakes take on the Inland Empire 66ers in the finale of the four-game series. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. It will be another Healthy RC Recycle Tuesday! Fans that bring 10 CRV-eligible bottles or cans to the ballpark will receive a free Club Seat Ticket to the game, thanks to the Healthy RC program and the city of Rancho Cucamonga.  Tickets are available at (909) 481-5000 or rcquakes.com.
