Lancaster JetHawks News Release
LANCASTER, Calif. - Antonio Nunez delivered a two-out pinch-hit walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth to lift the Lancaster JetHawks over the Modesto Nuts, 8-7 on Monday night at The Hangar.
It was Nunez's first pinch hitting appearance of the season. His clutch hit scored Bryan Muniz from second base, who was hit by a pitch earlier in the frame with one out. Two batters later, Jamie Ritchie kept the inning alive with a single, before Nunez was called on to pinch hit for Aaron Mizell.
Down 5-2 in the seventh, the JetHawks rallied for five runs to take a 7-5 lead. Ramon Laureano hit a three-run homer, his second long ball in as many nights, to tie the game. Jason Martin put Lancaster in front with an RBI double and Jamie Ritchie followed with a double of his own to score Martin.
After scoring once in the eighth to move to within one, the Nuts were down to their final strike with two out in the top of the ninth. Troy Stein hit his second home run of the game to even the contest, 7-7.
Stein's first blast came in the second inning. The three-run shot gave Modesto the game's first lead. The JetHawks scored a pair in the third on a two-out two-run double off the bat of Garrett Stubbs. Modesto added unearned runs in the fifth and sixth to make it 5-2.
Ryan Thompson (2-1) allowed the game-tying home run to Stein, but picked up the win. Yoely Bello (1-1) took the loss for Modesto.
The JetHawks (31-26) and Nuts (21-36) conclude their four-game series on Tuesday night at The Hangar. Rogelio Armenteros (3-1) will start for Lancaster against Parker French (2-4). First pitch is 6:35 p.m.
