San Jose Giants News Release
SAN JOSE, CA - Bakersfield's Tyler Herb allowed just one run over seven innings while the Blaze hit two more homers in an 8-3 victory over the San Jose Giants on Monday evening at Municipal Stadium. The loss was the third straight for the Giants (33-24) to open the series. San Jose has suffered three consecutive home losses for the first time this season.
Ronnie Jebavy (2-for-3, RBI) and Robbie Garvey (2-for-3, 2B, SB) had two hits apiece to lead the Giants offensively in defeat.
San Jose jumped out early with a single run in the bottom of the first against Herb to take a 1-0 lead. Jebavy started the frame by drawing a walk before Brandon Bednar singled to left putting runners on the corners. C.J Hinojosa then lifted a sacrifice fly to center plating Jebavy with the first run of the night. Herb though limited the damage in the inning when the next batter, Chris Shaw, lined into a double play to shortstop.
Jordan Johnson started on the mound for the Giants and breezed through the first before running into trouble in the top of the second. Kyle Petty began the second inning with a single before moving to second on a Jay Baum groundout. Tyler Marlette then struck out, but Joe DeCarlo followed with a towering two-run homer to left. The home run, DeCarlo's fourth of the series and fifth this season, gave the Blaze a 2-1 lead.
Bakersfield then extended their advantage with a run in the fourth. A walk to Chantz Mark started the frame before Petty flied out. Baum then hit a grounder to shortstop, but Hinojosa's short throw to Bednar at second, in an attempt to force out Mack, bounced away. The error allowed Mack to move into third while Baum was safe at first. Marlette then grounded into a fielder's choice to third as Baum was forced out, but Mack scored to make it 3-1.
Meanwhile, Herb settled in for the Blaze after the first. The Bakersfield starter retired the Giants 1-2-3 in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings.
Johnson had retired five straight Blaze hitters until Petty launched a home run to left with one out in the sixth. The homer pushed the Bakersfield lead to 4-1.
In the bottom of the sixth, Garvey singled with one out to break the string of 15 consecutive hitters that had been retired by Herb. Garvey then stole second before Jebavy singled to put runners on the corners and bring the potential tying run to the plate. Herb though induced the next hitter, Bednar, to ground into an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play.
The Blaze then broke the game open with a four-run top of the seventh against San Jose reliever Jose Reyes (1/3 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 0 SO). A walk to DeCarlo began the inning before consecutive singles from Gianfranco Wawoe and Aaron Barbosa loaded the bases with none out. Drew Jackson followed with a grounder to second that saw Bednar successfully force out DeCarlo at the plate. Reyes though walked the next hitter, Arby Fields, on five pitches to force home a run. Mack was up next and he singled into left plating two runs before Petty capped the Bakersfield scoring with an RBI single for an 8-1 cushion.
Herb finished his outing with a scoreless bottom of the seventh before the Giants pushed across single runs in the eighth and ninth against the Blaze bullpen. In the bottom of the eighth, Garvey doubled down the left field line with one out and immediately scored when the next batter, Jebavy, lined a single into center. In the ninth, Hinojosa led off with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch and eventually scored on a two-out error.
Herb (6-2) notched the win after allowing just three hits and one run during his seven-inning start. The right-hander walked two and struck out three.
Johnson (5-4) suffered the loss after yielding four runs (three earned) and five hits over six innings. He walked one and matched a season-high with seven strikeouts.
