10 No-Hit Innings ... and a Loss
May 26, 2021 - Texas League (TL)
Midland RockHounds News Release
The first two Frisco batters Tuesday night each singled, putting runners at the corners with no outs. The RoughRiders failed to score, and they would not get another base hit the rest of the night. And ... Frisco won the game.
After nine innings of scoreless baseball, it took the new extra-innings protocol (each extra inning begins with a designated runner at second base) to help produce the game's first ... and only ... run.
In the top of the 10th, Frisco used a sacrifice bunt by Bubba Thompson and a sac fly off the bat of Jake Hoover to break the scoreless tie.
The RockHounds also got a perfect sac bunt (from Mickey McDonald) to put the tying run on third with one out before RoughRiders reliever Cole Uvila struck out two batters to end the game.
Clearly, pitching for both teams was outstanding. Frisco's Jake Latz went five innings and allowed just a single and two walks while striking out seven and the RockHounds' Chase Cohen, after giving up the back-to-back hits to open the game, retired the last 10 batters he faced. Jared Koenig relieved Cohen and tossed 4â..." scoreless (and no-hit) innings with three walks and four strikeouts. (See "Kibbles & Bits" for more on Latz and Cohen).
So, no, the Rockhounds didn't throw a no-hitter. But after the back-to-back hits top open the contest, 'Hounds pitching tossed 10 consecutive no-hit innings ... and lost, 1-0.
Kibbles & Bits

The RockHounds' Chase Cohen made three relief appearances to open the season and was saddled with an earned run average of 12.00. Since then he has moved to the starting rotation and, in three starts, has not allowed a run (earned or otherwise), giving up seven hits in 9â..." innings, walking two and whiffing 11.
