SeaWolves Drop Series Opener to Altoona

The SeaWolves dropped their third straight game as they dropped the series opener to the Altoona Curve, 5-2, on Thursday night at People's Natural Gas Field.

Altoona jumped ahead in the bottom of the first against Erie starter Kyle Funkhouser. Cole Tucker led off with a walk and moved into scoring position on a Ke'Bryan Hayes base hit. Tucker scored on a two-out Jordan George single for a 1-0 lead.

The Curve took a 2-0 lead in the last of the third when Jason Martin connected on a solo home run to right.

Altoona again added to the lead in the fourth. Logan Hill led off with a single and stole second. He move to third on an Elvis Escobar groundout and scored on a Stephen Alemais sacrifice fly to center making it 3-0.

The Curve would go ahead 5-0 in the bottom of the fifth when Hill connected on a two-run home run to center.

The SeaWolves lone runs came in the top of the seventh against Curve starter Mitch Keller. Gabriel Quintana led off with a walk and moved to third on a Josh Lester single to right. Quintana scored on a Kade Scivicque sacrifice fly to right to make it 5-1. With two outs, Troy Montgomery tripled home Lester making it 5-2.

Two Curve relievers, Sean Keselica and Jesus Liranzo retired six of the last seven batters, holding Erie scoreless over the final two innings to preserve the Curve win. Liranzo earned his second save in as many chances tossing a scoreless ninth.

Keller (3-1) earned the win allowing two runs on four hits with two walks and six strikeouts in seven innings of work, tying a season-high.

Funkhouser (0-3) took the loss for Erie allowing five runs on nine hits with three walks and a strikeout.

The SeaWolves and Curve will play a doubleheader on Friday at PNG Field beginning at 4:30 p.m. Lefty Tyler Alexander (2-0, 4.00 ERA) takes the mound for Erie in game one against LHP Taylor Hearn (0-2, 5.75 ERA). Righty Kyle Dowdy (2-1, 4.15 ERA) takes the mound for Erie in game two. It will be Dowdy's second start. He struck out a season-high 10 batters against Trenton in his only other start this season.
