Binghamton's Alonso Named April Player of the Month

Portland, ME -- The Eastern League is pleased to announce Binghamton Rumble Ponies first baseman Peter Alonso has been selected as the Eastern League Player of the Month for the month of April. Alonso batted .408 (31-for-76) with seven doubles, seven home runs, 19 RBIs, 18 runs scored, a .505 on-base percentage, and a .776 slugging percentage in 21 games during the month. The 23-year old reached base in 19 of the 21 games he played in during the month of April and had multiple hits in 10 of those games. He also finished the month of April with an eight game hitting streak, which including a stretch of four straight games with a home run from April 25th-April 29th.

The 6'3", 245 lb. slugger led all Eastern League players in batting average (.408), hits (31), extra-base hits (14), total bases (59), on-base percentage (.505), slugging percentage (.776), and OPS (1.282) during the month of April and tied for the league lead in home runs (7) and walks (15). He also finished ranked among the monthly league leaders in RBIs (19-2nd), runs scored (18-tied 2nd), and doubles (7-tied 3rd).

Alonso, who is a native of Tampa, Florida, was especially impressive during the last week of the month when he took home Eastern League Player of the Week honors for the period of April 23rd-April 29th batting .545 (12-for-22) with four homers, eight RBIs, and eight runs scored in six games during the week.

Peter, who is rated by MLB.com as the fourth best prospect in the New York Mets organization, was selected by the New York Mets in the second round of the 2016 draft out of the University of Florida.
