Silvertips Clinch Playoff Spot Despite Shootout Loss

February 21, 2015 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Everett Silvertips News Release

EVERETT - The Everett Silvertips scored in the first and held the lead until the 57th minute when the Tri-City Americans scored to tie the game and then take a 2-1 shootout victory Friday night at XFINITY Arena. The 'Tips gain one point with the shootout defeat to clinch a WHL playoff spot for the 12th consecutive season.

Carson Stadnyk scored the only goal for the Silvertips with the assist going to Dawson Leedahl. Austin Lotz (23-12-1-3) turned away 26 of 27 shots and was less than three minutes away from the shutout when Tri-City tied the game. Americans goaltender Eric Comrie (17-16-0-1) stopped 30 of 31 shots and all three Everett shooters in shootout.

With no scoring early in the opening frame, a rare fight between Ivan Nikolishin and Ty Comrie got the action started. Nikita Scherbak had a partial breakaway midway through period, but was turned away by Eric Comrie to keep the game scoreless. Later on, Dawson Leedahl led Carson Stadnyk into the offensive zone where he cut to the net and lifted a shot to the top shelf for a highlight-reel goal to get the 'Tips on the board. Everett took a penalty with less than a minute to go in the first, but led 1-0 after 20 minutes.

The Silvertips killed off the remainder of the Tri-City powerplay to start the second. The 'Tips got their first powerplay of the game midway through the period, but couldn't score to give themselves a two-goal cushion. Both teams hit posts and the period and Tri-City had a few quality scoring chances after turnovers in the Silvertips zone, but Austin Lotz shut the door to keep it a 1-0 game through two periods. Shots were 20-17 for Everett through 40 minutes of play.

A one-goal game meant both teams were playing tight throughout the third period. At the halfway point of the frame, the Silvertips were headed to their second powerplay for another good opportunity to take a two-goal lead. After numerous shot attempts, the Americans were able to clear the zone, leaving a pressure-packed end to the game. With minutes to go in the third, Parker Wotherspoon fired a long shot through traffic to tie the game at one and force overtime. Tri-City's Tyler Sandhu scored the only goal in the shootout to take a 2-1 victory for the visitors.

Everett finished ahead 31-27 on the shot clock and both teams were 0 for 2 on powerplay opportunities.

The Silvertips continue a three-in-three weekend Saturday night in Kent with a 6:05 opening faceoff against the Seattle Thunderbirds. Pregame radio coverage starts at 5:30 pm on Fox Sports 1380. The 'Tips will then return home to take on the Lethbridge Hurricanes Sunday afternoon at 4:05 at XFINITY Arena.
