Chasers Pound Padres' Relievers in 11-8 Win

Omaha Storm Chasers News Release

OMAHA, Neb. - The Omaha Storm Chasers (22-20) used a season-high four home runs, including three off of Tucson Padres (23-21) relievers, to take a series-opening shootout by a score of 11-8. The Storm Chasers battled back with eight runs in their final three frames after trailing 7-3 entering the sixth inning, the largest comeback win of the 2013 season for Omaha.

Catcher Adam Moore got the scoring started for the home team by smacking his third homer in his last five games to give the Chasers a 3-2 in the second, but the T-Pads scored five unanswered runs over the next four innings to stretch their lead to 7-3. The Omaha offense responded in a big way with a four-run sixth inning, with first baseman Chad Tracy providing the exclamation point with a mammoth three-run home run to left field. It was Tracy's first home run at Werner Park this season.

After Tucson regained the lead in the next half inning 8-7, shortstop Irving Falu tied the game with a RBI single and second baseman Christian Colon gave the Chasers the lead for good with a two-run shot to dead center in the seventh. Colon has five homers in 40 career games at the Triple-A level, and 16 in 267 games below Triple-A, while the middle infielder has racked up 11 hits in his last nine games to raise his average from .211 to .243 during that span.

Omaha was held in check for the first five innings by Tucson starter Brandon Kloess, who was making a spot start for only the sixth time in his professional career, and the right-hander retired 11 in a row after giving up the Moore homer to finish his outing. The Chasers proceeded to score four runs apiece off of Padres relievers Jorge Reyes and Brad Boxberger, with seven of the eight coming on three homers off pitchers who had not allowed a home run all season for the San Diego Triple-A affiliate. The Chasers pulled out the victory despite allowing 13 hits and committing four errors, with the error total a new season-high and the hits allowed being the most in a win this year.

Omaha has totaled 12 homers in the last six games, and nine during the current homestand, and the Chasers now rank fourth in PCL at 46 round-trippers. The team-leader in long balls Max Ramirez did not have a homer in the game, but the designated hitter continued his monster month of May by going 3-for-4 on the night, raising his average this month to .429 (24-for-56) with a team-high 13 RBI with one run knocked in during the seventh inning rally.

The win moves the Chasers record against the Tucson Padres to 8-1 since the San Diego Padres switched their affiliation from the Portland Beavers to Tucson before the 2011 season, and the win is their sixth consecutive victory over the Padres. In the second game of the series Omaha will send out left-hander Justin Marks (1-2, 5.79 ERA), who earned his first win of the season in his first career outing at Werner Park earlier in the homestand. Marks will match up with MLB rehabber Clayton Richard (0-1, 1.50 ERA), who won 14 games for San Diego last year, with first pitch set for 6:35 p.m.
