Elmira Jackals News Release

ELMIRA, N.Y. - November 21, 2012 - The Elmira Jackals beat the Greenville Road Warriors by a 2-1 score on Wednesday night at First Arena. The win improved Elmira's record to 8-6-1 on the season.

Elmira entered the game with the best home power play in the ECHL at 34.2 percent and it was that power play that lifted the Jackals to the early lead. Kyle Bushee launched a shot from the right point that was stopped by Greenville's Nathan Lieuwen, but Artem Demkov pounced on the rebound. Demkov's seventh goal of the season broke an eight-game goal drought and also gave Bushee his 100th ECHL point with the primary assist. Dustin Gazley also assisted on the goal at 12:59 of the first. Marc Cheverie got the start for Elmira and was tested with 14 shots in the first but knocked away each one.

In the second, Greenville had a chance to even the score when Elmira's Andrew Rowe was whistled for tripping just over six minutes in. But the Jackals ratcheted up the defense and preserved the lead. Shortly after coming back to full strength Rowe and Gazley set up Demkov off the rush and he netted his second tally of the night. The goal came at the 9:36 mark of the second. Greenville cut Elmira's lead in half 5:02 later when Danny Hobbs punched home a feed from behind the net by Brendan Connolly. That was one of 20 shots in the second by the Road Warriors, but Cheverie thrived in the busy atmosphere.

The third period saw Greenville start a parade to the penalty box and give the Jackals five different chances on the power play. While the Jackals couldn't convert again on the man advantage, they did use the time to keep Greenville pinned down in its own end and tire the Road Warriors out. They were limited to six shots in the stanza and each was stopped by Cheverie. Things got testy at 3:38 when, after Matt McKenzie had finished serving a boarding minor for a hit on Jean Bourbeau, Darren Kramer looked for retribution. The rookie was hit with a game misconduct and a roughing minor for his role while fighting majors were dished out to Ben Blood and Greenville's Bretton Cameron.

Cheverie picked up his fifth win of the season by making 39 saves on the night. Elmira went 1-for-6 on the power play and 2-for-2 on the penalty kill.
