Norfolk Admirals News Release
NORFOLK - Corey Elkins scored twice and goaltenders Frederik Anderson and Igor Bobkov combined for a 25-save shutout as the Norfolk Admirals opened their 2012-13 preseason schedule with a 3-0 win over the Charlotte Checkers on Saturday night at Norfolk Scope Arena.
Kyle Palmieri added a goal and an assist in the victory, which was the first game played for the Admirals as the top minor league affiliate of the Anaheim Ducks. Andersen stopped all 15 shots he faced through the first two periods before giving way to Bobkov, who closed out the game with ten saves in the final frame.
The Admirals controlled much of the first period, out-shooting the Checkers, 11-5, and taking a 1-0 lead midway through the frame. Emerson Etem sent a pass across the blueline to Elkins as he entered the attacking zone along the right wing. Elkins sent a snap shot from the right hashmarks past the blocker of Charlotte netminder Justin Peters and into the top of the net at 9:17.
The Checkers turned the tide in the second period, out-shooting Norfolk, 10-7. Zac Dalpe sent two of those shots past Andersen, but hit the post behind the goaltender's left shoulder. The game remained 1-0 in favor of the home team after two periods.
The Admirals doubled their lead on the power play 7:54 into the final frame. Devante Smith-Pelly sent a cross-ice pass to Palmieri in the left circle. Palmieri one-timed the puck past Peters' right leg to extend the Norfolk lead to 2-0.
Elkins closed out scoring just over five minutes later. Matt Smaby sent a shot from the left point through traffic. Elkins found the rebound in a goalmouth scramble and shoveled the puck past Peters at 12:56.
Peters made 24 saves on 27 shots in defeat for the Checkers.
Norfolk was 1-for-5 on the power play. Charlotte was 0-for-3 with the man advantage.
