Bees Sting Isotopes 3-2

Jerry Sands scored both runs for the 'Topes, going 3-for-3 with a homer, his third dinger in the last two games, but it wasn't enough as the Salt Lake Bees (19-20) defeated the Albuquerque Isotopes (24-15) 3-2 on Monday night at Spring Mobile Ballpark. Despite the loss, Albuquerque holds a 2-1 advantage over the Bees in the four-game set, and can still capture a series victory with a win tomorrow.

Trailing by one run in the seventh inning, the 'Topes found run support from slugger Sands, who belted a leadoff home run over the right field wall, knotting the score 2-2. Salt Lake immediately responded beginning with a seeing-eye single through the hole at second from Doug Deeds, who advanced to second on a wild pitch. Ed Lucas then roped a single to center, advancing Deeds to third with one out. The Bees finished their rally with a small-ball sac-bunt from Andrew Romine that plated Deeds and gave Salt Lake a 3-2 lead.

Albuquerque came within striking distance in the ninth when Tyler Henson drew a one-out walk and advanced to third two batters later on a walk to Matt Angle. With the tying run on third and two outs, Ivan De Jesus Jr. flew to center for the final out, sealing a 3-2 Bees' victory.

Isotopes starter Stephen Fife (3-3) delivered a strong performance, allowing only two earned runs on seven hits through seven innings of work. Salt Lake starter Garrett Richards (4-1) held 'Topes batting in check most of the night, giving up two runs on a mere four hits.

Sands collected his first run of the game in the fifth when he belted a double to center, advanced to third on a sac-bunt and scored on a force out. The red-hot outfielder is now hitting .438 (7x16) over the past five games.

Albuquerque concludes its four-game set in Salt Lake tomorrow at 10:35 AM. 'Topes righty John Ely (3-2, 4.64) will toe the slab against Bees right-hander Eric Hurley (2-3, 7.64) in the final game of the series.

The Isotopes concludes their eight-game road trip tomorrow against the Salt Lake Bees, Triple-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels. The team will return home on May 17 for a 12-game homestand, the longest such stretch of the 2012 season that includes the Celebrity Softball Game, Bark in the Park, fireworks and a bobblehead giveaway.
