Sacramento, CA - The Chicago Cubs have signed free agent RHP Mike MacDougal and assigned him to the Iowa Cubs. The Cubs have also placed Iowa IF Jonathan Mota on the disabled list with a sore right elbow, effective May 14.

MacDougal began the season with the Los Angeles Dodgers, but was released on May 11. He had no record and a 7.94 ERA in seven games out of the Dodgers' bullpen this year. Last year, MacDougal made a career-high 69 appearances and ranked seventh among National League relievers with a 2.05 ERA.

The 35-year-old MacDougal has a career record of 18-23 with a 4.00 ERA and 71 saves over the last 12 seasons with the Kansas City Royals (2001-06), Chicago White Sox (2006-09), Washington Nationals ('09), St. Louis Cardinals (2010), and Dodgers (2011-12). MacDougal finished sixth in the American League with 27 saves and second with 61 games finished while being selected to the All-Star team with the Royals in 2003. He was Kansas City's Pitcher of the Year in 2005 after going 5-6 with a 3.33 ERA and 21 saves in 68 games. In 2009, he led the Nationals with 20 saves and posted a 3.60 ERA in 52 games after getting released by the White Sox on May 1. The Royals selected MacDougal in the first round (25th overall) of the 1999 draft out of Wake Forest University.

Mota has a sore right elbow. He had to leave Saturday night's game in the middle of an at-bat after aggravating the injury. Mota is batting .235 (4-for-17) with a double, a triple, a home run, and five RBI in seven games with Iowa this season. Mota began the season with double-A Tennessee and batted .293 (17-for-58) with four doubles, three home runs, and 10 RBI in 21 games for the Smokies before getting promoted on May 6.
